  1. 1. (B2)

Gdyby negocjacje trwały dłużej, strony ... do porozumienia.

    1. A. mogły by dojść
    2. B. mogły dojść by
    3. C. mogłyby dojść
    Poloniusz explains:

In the conditional mood (tryb przypuszczający), the particle „by” joins with the personal form of the verb, so the correct form is „mogłyby dojść”. The spelling „mogły by dojść” wrongly separates the particle from the verb. The arrangement „mogły dojść by” is incorrect, because the particle „by” does not take this position after the infinitive in this construction.

Rule: mobile particle by in the conditional mood

  2. 2. (B2)

    Gdybym znał adres, ... zaproszenie.

    1. A. wysłałbym
    2. B. wysłał bym
    3. C. wysłałby
    Poloniusz explains:

In the conditional mood (tryb przypuszczający), the particle „by” with the personal ending joins with the verb form: „wysłałbym”. The form „wysłałby” is third person, so it does not fit the first person expressed by „gdybym”. The spelling „wysłał bym” separates elements that in this construction should be written together.

Rule: mobile personal ending and the particle by in the conditional mood

  3. 3. (B2)

Gdybyście ... termin wcześniej, moglibyśmy zmienić rezerwację.

    1. A. potwierdzili
    2. B. potwierdziliście
    3. C. potwierdzilibyście
    Poloniusz explains:

In a conditional construction with „gdybyście”, the personal ending and the particle „by” are already included in the conjunction, so the verb takes the form „potwierdzili”. The forms „potwierdziliście” and „potwierdzilibyście” repeat the personal element, and the second one also duplicates the conditional mood (tryb przypuszczający). This is a typical error resulting from excessive marking of the person in the sentence.

Rule: the particle by and the mobile personal ending in a conditional sentence

  4. 4. (B2)

Ja wczoraj ... o tym powiedzieć.

    1. A. powinien był
    2. B. powinienem byłem
    3. C. powinienem był
    Poloniusz explains:

In a sentence with the subject „ja”, the predicate must have the first person singular form: „powinienem był”. The form „powinien był” refers to the third person and does not agree with the subject. The construction „powinienem byłem” is an incorrect combination of two personal forms.

Rule: mobile personal ending of the past tense in forms of the type powinienem był

  5. 5. (B2)

Które uzupełnienie jest niepoprawne w zdaniu „... to wyjaśnił bardzo dokładnie”?

    1. A. Mi kierownik
    2. B. Kierownik mi
    3. C. Wczoraj mi
    Poloniusz explains:

The unstressed pronoun „mi” should not begin a sentence in careful Polish. Constructions in which the pronoun stands after the first sentence stress are correct, for example „Kierownik mi” or „Wczoraj mi”. The word order (szyk) „Mi kierownik” is colloquial and, under the examination norm, is treated as incorrect.

Rule: position of the unstressed pronoun mi in the sentence

  6. 6. (B2)

Mimo ... kompletu załączników wniosek odrzucono z powodów formalnych.

    1. A. złożyć
    2. B. złożenie
    3. C. złożenia
    Poloniusz explains:

The preposition „mimo” governs the genitive (dopełniacz), so the correct form is „złożenia”. The form „złożenie” is in the nominative (mianownik) or the accusative (biernik) and does not fit this construction. The infinitive „złożyć” cannot replace the verbal noun here in this shortened syntactic construction.

Rule: verbal noun in the genitive after the preposition mimo

  7. 7. (B2)

Osoby ... udziałem w konsultacjach społecznych mogą zgłaszać uwagi do piątku.

    1. A. zainteresując
    2. B. zainteresowani
    3. C. zainteresowane
    Poloniusz explains:

The relative clause „osoby, które są zainteresowane udziałem” can be shortened to the participial expression „osoby zainteresowane udziałem”. The form „zainteresując” means performing an action and does not form a correct modifier of the noun „osoby” here. The form „zainteresowani” does not agree in gender with the noun „osoby”, which requires the non-masculine-personal gender (rodzaj niemęskoosobowy): „zainteresowane”.

Rule: shortening a relative clause to a participial modifier

  8. 8. (B2)

Po szczegółowym ... dokumentacji zespół zaproponował poprawki.

    1. A. przeanalizowanie
    2. B. przeanalizować
    3. C. przeanalizowaniu
    Poloniusz explains:

After the preposition „po” in the meaning of temporal sequence, the locative (miejscownik) is used, so the form „przeanalizowaniu” is needed. The form „przeanalizowanie” has a case that does not match the requirements of the preposition. The infinitive „przeanalizować” does not form a correct construction here for shortening a subordinate clause (zdanie podrzędne).

Rule: verbal noun in the locative after the preposition po

  9. 9. (B2)

Proszę dołączyć potwierdzenie przelewu ... numeru zamówienia.

    1. A. w celu ustalić
    2. B. w celu ustalenie
    3. C. w celu ustalenia
    Poloniusz explains:

The expression „w celu” combines with a verbal noun in the genitive (dopełniacz), so „w celu ustalenia” is correct. The construction „w celu ustalić” is a syntactic calque and is not correct in standard Polish. The form „w celu ustalenie” has the wrong case, because the nominative (mianownik) is not used after „w celu”.

Rule: shortening a purpose clause with the expression w celu and the genitive

  10. 10. (B2)

Raport trafi do zarządu ... wszystkich danych przez dział analiz.

    1. A. po zweryfikowaniu
    2. B. po zweryfikować
    3. C. po weryfikacja
    Poloniusz explains:

After the preposition „po” in the meaning of sequence of actions, a verbal noun in the locative (miejscownik) is used, for example „po zweryfikowaniu”. The infinitive „zweryfikować” does not combine with this preposition. The form „po weryfikacja” violates the case requirements, because after „po” the form „weryfikacji” is needed, not the nominative (mianownik).

Rule: changing a time clause into a prepositional phrase with a verbal noun

  11. 11. (B2)

Skan decyzji jest już gotowy. ...

    1. A. Wyślę go panu
    2. B. Wyślę panu go
    3. C. Go wyślę panu
    Poloniusz explains:

In neutral word order (szyk), a short unstressed pronoun is not placed at the beginning of an utterance, and in this sentence it is most naturally placed after the verb and before the form „panu”. Therefore, the correct word order is „Wyślę go panu”.

Rule: word order of a short unstressed pronoun in a sentence

  12. 12. (B2)

Skróć zdanie złożone. Gdy zespół analizował dane, zauważył błąd. ... dane, zespół zauważył błąd.

    1. A. Analizowany
    2. B. Analizować
    3. C. Analizując
    Poloniusz explains:

If the same person or group performs both actions, the time clause can be shortened with a contemporaneous adverbial participle (imiesłów przysłówkowy współczesny): „analizując dane”. The form „analizowany” is an adjectival participle (imiesłów przymiotnikowy) and does not create this kind of shortening, while „analizować” is an infinitive used here in a way that does not agree with the syntax of the sentence.

Rule: contemporaneous adverbial participle in shortening a subordinate clause

  13. 13. (B2)

Uzupełnij odpowiedź tak, aby informacja, o którą pytamy, znalazła się na końcu zdania. - Co zarząd zatwierdził po dyskusji? - Po dyskusji zarząd zatwierdził ...

    1. A. dyrektor
    2. B. budżet
    3. C. dyskusji
    Poloniusz explains:

In a neutral answer, the new information, that is, the answer to the question „co?”, usually stands at the end of the sentence. The word „budżet” is an object in the accusative (biernik) and answers this question. The forms „dyrektor” and „dyskusji” do not complete the sentence correctly in the given context.

Rule: neutral word order and placing new information at the end of the sentence

  14. 14. (B2)

Uzupełnij odpowiedź tak, aby nowa informacja znalazła się na końcu. Pytanie: „Kto prowadzi szkolenie?”. Szkolenie prowadzi ...

    1. A. doktor prowadzi Nowak
    2. B. Nowak doktor
    3. C. doktor Nowak
    Poloniusz explains:

In an answer to a question about the performer of an action, the known information, that is „szkolenie”, may stand at the beginning, and the new information at the end of the sentence. In a combination of a title and a surname, the neutral word order (szyk) has the form „doktor Nowak”. The expression „Nowak doktor” violates this order, and „doktor prowadzi Nowak” does not fit syntactically with the given beginning of the sentence.

Rule: position of new information at the end of the sentence and the order of title before surname

  15. 15. (B2)

Uzupełnij odpowiedź tak, aby podkreślić, co przygotowano, a nie kto to zrobił. Pytanie: „Co komisja przygotowała po konsultacjach?”. Komisja przygotowała po konsultacjach ...

    1. A. projekt uchwały
    2. B. uchwały projekt
    3. C. projekt po konsultacjach uchwały
    Poloniusz explains:

In an answer to the question „co?”, new information naturally appears at the end of the sentence. In a noun phrase, the head noun stands before the defining genitive (dopełniacz): „projekt uchwały”. The word order (szyk) „uchwały projekt” and the separation of the components in the expression „projekt po konsultacjach uchwały” violate the neutral structure of this group.

Rule: order of the genitive defining a noun and the position of new information at the end of the sentence

  16. 16. (B2)

    ... w holu po konferencji.

    1. A. Spotkaliśmy z organizatorami się
    2. B. Się spotkaliśmy z organizatorami
    3. C. Spotkaliśmy się z organizatorami
    Poloniusz explains:

The pronoun „się” should not open a sentence or stand at the end of the predicate group if other elements follow the verb. In this sentence, the correct word order (szyk) is „spotkaliśmy się z organizatorami”, with the pronoun directly after the verb.

Rule: word order of the pronoun się with a reflexive verb

  17. 17. (B2)

... warunki umowy, możecie dziś podpisać dokumenty.

    1. A. Skoro wy zaakceptowali
    2. B. Skoroście zaakceptowali
    3. C. Skoroście zaakceptowaliście
    Poloniusz explains:

The personal ending of the past tense can attach to a conjunction, so the combination „skoroście zaakceptowali” is correct. In the form „skoroście zaakceptowaliście”, the personal ending has been repeated. The expression „skoro wy zaakceptowali” is incorrect, because with the pronoun „wy” the past-tense verb must have the personal ending: „zaakceptowaliście”.

Rule: mobile personal ending of the past tense with a conjunction

  18. 18. (B2)

Wybierz odpowiedź tak, aby informacja, o którą pytamy, znalazła się na końcu zdania. Gdzie zespół przedstawił wyniki badań?

    1. A. Zespół przedstawił wyniki badań na konferencji.
    2. B. Na konferencji zespół przedstawił wyniki badań.
    3. C. Zespół na konferencji przedstawił wyniki badań.
    Poloniusz explains:

The question concerns place, so the adverbial expression of place should be at the end of the sentence if it is to be the highlighted information answering the question.

Rule: sentence word order and the information structure of the utterance

  19. 19. (B2)

Wybierz wariant, który nie może rozpocząć samodzielnego zdania ze względu na miejsce zaimka nieakcentowanego.

    1. A. nagle się okazało, że termin minął
    2. B. okazało się, że termin minął
    3. C. się okazało, że termin minął
    Poloniusz explains:

The short form of the reflexive pronoun (zaimek zwrotny) „się” cannot stand at the beginning of a sentence. The variant „się okazało, że termin minął” violates this rule. In the variants „okazało się, że termin minął” and „nagle się okazało, że termin minął”, the pronoun does not open the sentence, so its position is correct.

Rule: the pronoun się does not open a sentence

  20. 20. (B2)

Wybierz wariant z błędną pisownią cząstki „by” i końcówki osobowej.

    1. A. zgłosili byśmy uwagi
    2. B. gdybyśmy mieli czas
    3. C. zgłosilibyśmy uwagi
    Poloniusz explains:

The particle „by” is written together with a personal form of the verb: „zgłosilibyśmy”. It is also written together in the conjunction „gdybyśmy”. The spelling „zgłosili byśmy uwagi” separates the elements of one form of the conditional mood (tryb przypuszczający), so it is incorrect.

Rule: joined spelling of the particle by with a personal form of the verb

  21. 21. (B2)

Zachowując sens informacji: Najpierw zespół porównał oferty, a dopiero potem wybrał dostawcę. ... , zespół wybrał dostawcę.

    1. A. Po porównać oferty
    2. B. Porównując oferty
    3. C. Porównawszy oferty
    Poloniusz explains:

If one action was completed before another, you can use the anterior adverbial participle (imiesłów przysłówkowy uprzedni), for example „porównawszy oferty”. The form „porównując oferty” indicates that the actions are simultaneous, so it does not express the meaning of „najpierw..., a dopiero potem...”. The expression „po porównać oferty” is incorrect because the infinitive (bezokolicznik) is not used after the preposition „po”.

Rule: shortening a temporal clause with an anterior adverbial participle

  22. 22. (B2)

Zamień zdanie złożone na pojedyncze. Firma zmieniła procedury, żeby ograniczyć koszty. Firma zmieniła procedury w celu ... kosztów.

    1. A. ograniczenia
    2. B. ograniczyć
    3. C. ograniczeniem
    Poloniusz explains:

The expression „w celu” is used with the genitive (dopełniacz) of a verbal noun: „w celu ograniczenia kosztów”. The form „ograniczeniem” has the wrong case, and „ograniczyć” is an infinitive copied from constructions of the type „żeby ograniczyć”.

Rule: genitive of a verbal noun after the expression w celu

  23. 23. (B2)

Zamień zdanie złożone na pojedyncze. Jeżeli komisja odrzuci wniosek, można złożyć odwołanie. W razie ... wniosku można złożyć odwołanie.

    1. A. odrzuci
    2. B. odrzuceniu
    3. C. odrzucenia
    Poloniusz explains:

The expression „w razie” requires the genitive (dopełniacz): „w razie odrzucenia wniosku”. The form „odrzuceniu” has the wrong case, and „odrzuci” is a personal form of the verb, which is not used after this prepositional expression.

Rule: genitive of a verbal noun after the expression w razie

  24. 24. (B2)

Zamień zdanie złożone na pojedyncze. Przed tym, jak podpiszesz umowę, przeczytaj regulamin. Przed ... umowy przeczytaj regulamin.

    1. A. podpisać
    2. B. podpisaniem
    3. C. podpisanie
    Poloniusz explains:

The preposition „przed” in a time meaning is used with the instrumental (narzędnik) of a verbal noun: „przed podpisaniem umowy”. The form „podpisanie” has the wrong case here, and the infinitive „podpisać” does not combine directly with the preposition „przed” in this construction.

Rule: instrumental of a verbal noun after the preposition przed in a time meaning

  25. 25. (C1)

Aby dochować wymogów procedury, należy ... wniosek w formie elektronicznej.

    1. A. złożenia
    2. B. złożyć
    3. C. złożenie
    Poloniusz explains:

After the modal verb „należy” in the meaning of obligation, the infinitive is used. The forms „złożenia” and „złożenie” are verbal nouns, so they do not combine directly with „należy” in this construction. The mistake often results from mixing the constructions „należy złożyć” and „obowiązek złożenia”.

Rule: infinitive after the modal verb należy

  26. 26. (C1)

... decyzja zapadła bez konsultacji z ekspertami.

    1. A. Okazało, że
    2. B. Się okazało, że
    3. C. Okazało się, że
    Poloniusz explains:

The pronoun „się” should not open a sentence, so the spelling „Się okazało, że” is incorrect. The verb „okazać się” needs the reflexive pronoun, so the variant „Okazało, że” is syntactically incomplete. In neutral word order (szyk), the pronoun stands after the verb form: „Okazało się, że”.

Rule: position of the reflexive pronoun „się” with a verb

  27. 27. (C1)

... dokumentacji archiwalnej komisja sformułowała wnioski końcowe.

    1. A. Po przeanalizowania
    2. B. Po przeanalizować
    3. C. Po przeanalizowaniu
    Poloniusz explains:

The preposition „po” in a construction expressing temporal sequence requires a verbal noun in the locative (miejscownik), hence „po przeanalizowaniu”. The infinitive „po przeanalizować” is incorrect because the preposition does not combine with the infinitive. The form „po przeanalizowania” violates the case requirement.

Rule: verbal noun in the locative after the preposition po

  28. 28. (C1)

Które wyrażenie ma niepoprawny neutralny szyk grupy nominalnej?

    1. A. niezależny audyt finansowy
    2. B. pilna kontrola doraźna
    3. C. finansowy niezależny audyt
    Poloniusz explains:

In neutral word order (szyk), a qualitative adjective usually stands before the noun, and a relational adjective after the noun. That is why the expressions „niezależny audyt finansowy” and „pilna kontrola doraźna” are correct. In the expression „finansowy niezależny audyt”, this order has been reversed in a way that does not agree with the neutral syntax of the noun phrase.

Rule: qualitative adjective before the noun and relational adjective after the noun

  29. 29. (C1)

Organ zażądał dodatkowych dokumentów w celu ... tożsamości wnioskodawcy.

    1. A. potwierdzić
    2. B. potwierdzenie
    3. C. potwierdzenia
    Poloniusz explains:

The expression „w celu” is used with a noun in the genitive (dopełniacz), most often with a verbal noun. That is why the form „potwierdzenia” is correct. The infinitive „potwierdzić” and the nominative (mianownik) or accusative (biernik) form „potwierdzenie” do not fit this syntactic construction.

Rule: construction w celu with the genitive of a verbal noun

  30. 30. (C1)

Po ... dokumentacji audytorzy sformułowali trzy zastrzeżenia proceduralne.

    1. A. przeanalizowano
    2. B. przeanalizowaniu
    3. C. przeanalizować
    Poloniusz explains:

In the meaning of temporal sequence, the preposition „po” combines with the locative (miejscownik), also when it is followed by a verbal noun: „po przeanalizowaniu dokumentacji”. The infinitive „przeanalizować” cannot occur after this preposition, and the form „przeanalizowano” is a verb form, not an element of a prepositional phrase.

Rule: the construction po with the locative of a verbal noun

  31. 31. (C1)

Po ... konsultacji społecznych ministerstwo przedstawiło zmieniony projekt ustawy.

    1. A. zakończenie
    2. B. zakończyć
    3. C. zakończeniu
    Poloniusz explains:

The preposition „po” in the meaning of temporal sequence requires the locative (miejscownik). In a construction that shortens a temporal clause, the form „zakończeniu” should therefore be used. The forms „zakończenie” and „zakończyć” do not meet the syntactic requirements of the preposition „po”.

Rule: changing a temporal clause into a prepositional expression with a verbal noun

  32. 32. (C1)

Rada ... za projektem, gdyby przedstawiono dodatkowe gwarancje finansowe.

    1. A. opowiedziała by się
    2. B. opowiedziałaby się
    3. C. opowiedział by się
    Poloniusz explains:

In the conditional mood (tryb przypuszczający), the particle „by” is written together with a personal form of the verb. The form must also agree with the subject in gender and number, so with the subject „rada” the feminine form „opowiedziałaby się” is needed. The spelling „opowiedziała by się” separates the particle contrary to the norm, and „opowiedział by się” additionally has the wrong gender.

Rule: movable personal ending of the past tense and the particle by

  33. 33. (C1)

    Raport skorygowano ... nowych danych.

    1. A. w następstwie ujawniono
    2. B. w następstwo ujawnienia
    3. C. w następstwie ujawnienia
    Poloniusz explains:

The expression „w następstwie” is used with the genitive (dopełniacz) and can introduce a cause, similarly to „na skutek” or „wskutek”. That is why the construction with the verbal noun „ujawnienia” is correct. The variant „w następstwie ujawniono” incorrectly inserts a personal form of the verb, and „w następstwo ujawnienia” violates the fixed form of the prepositional expression.

Rule: syntactic synonymy of causal expressions with a verbal noun

  34. 34. (C1)

Senat uczelni upoważnił rektora ... porozumienia z instytutem partnerskim.

    1. A. o podpisanie
    2. B. do podpisania
    3. C. podpisać
    Poloniusz explains:

The verb „upoważnić” takes the construction „kogoś do czegoś”, so after the preposition „do” a verbal noun appears in the genitive (dopełniacz): „do podpisania”. The infinitive „podpisać” does not realize this verb government (rekcja czasownika). The expression „o podpisanie” is correct with other verbs, for example „prosić o podpisanie”.

Rule: verbal noun after upoważnić kogoś do czegoś

  35. 35. (C1)

... tej sprawy bez zapoznania się z pełnymi aktami.

    1. A. Się nie rozstrzyga
    2. B. Nie rozstrzyga się
    3. C. Nie się rozstrzyga
    Poloniusz explains:

The pronoun „się” should not open a sentence or stand directly after the negating particle in a construction of the type „nie się”. In an impersonal sentence, the natural and correct word order (szyk) is „nie rozstrzyga się”. The mistake in the variant „się nie rozstrzyga” often comes from treating „się” as a fixed element of the verb.

Rule: the pronoun się does not open a sentence and does not stand after nie alone

  36. 36. (C1)

Uzupełnij zdanie poprawnym szykiem: ... na niepublikowane dane, jeżeli nie wskazano ich źródła.

    1. A. Się nie należy powoływać
    2. B. Nie należy powoływać się
    3. C. Nie należy powoływać
    Poloniusz explains:

The verb „powoływać się”, in the meaning of referring to something, needs the reflexive pronoun „się”. The pronoun „się” should not open a sentence, so the construction „Się nie należy powoływać” is incorrect. The variant „Nie należy powoływać” omits the obligatory element of the reflexive construction.

Rule: position of the pronoun się in an infinitive construction

  37. 37. (C1)

Uzupełnij zdanie poprawnym szykiem partykuły: Projekt wolno upublicznić ...

    1. A. dopiero po uzyskaniu akceptacji redakcji
    2. B. po dopiero uzyskaniu akceptacji redakcji
    3. C. po uzyskaniu akceptacji dopiero redakcji
    Poloniusz explains:

The particle „dopiero” precedes the element of the sentence that limits the time or condition under which the action is performed. In this sentence, it refers to the whole prepositional expression „po uzyskaniu akceptacji redakcji”, so it stands before it. Placing it after the preposition or inside the noun group disturbs the reference of the particle.

Rule: position of the particle dopiero with a prepositional expression

  38. 38. (C1)

Uzupełnij zdanie poprawnym zapisem cząstki warunkowej: Gdyby nie klauzula poufności, opinię ... do akt sprawy.

    1. A. dołączyli byśmy
    2. B. dołączyliśmy by
    3. C. dołączylibyśmy
    Poloniusz explains:

In the conditional mood (tryb przypuszczający), the particle „by” with the personal ending combines with the past-tense form of the verb. Therefore the correct spelling is „dołączylibyśmy”. The spellings „dołączyli byśmy” and „dołączyliśmy by” split the conditional form in a way that is not in accordance with the norm.

Rule: movable personal ending of the past tense and the particle by

  39. 39. (C1)

Uzupełnij zdanie rzeczownikiem odczasownikowym: Bez ... zgody organu pełnomocnik nie może cofnąć wniosku.

    1. A. uprzednie uzyskanie
    2. B. uprzednio uzyskać
    3. C. uprzedniego uzyskania
    Poloniusz explains:

After the preposition „bez” the genitive (dopełniacz) is used, so the construction with the verbal noun „uprzedniego uzyskania” is correct. The infinitive „uprzednio uzyskać” cannot perform the function governed here by the preposition. The form „uprzednie uzyskanie” is in the nominative (mianownik) or the accusative (biernik), not the genitive.

Rule: verbal noun in the genitive after the preposition bez

  40. 40. (C1)

Uzupełnij zdanie tak, aby zachować sens przyczynowy: ... nieusunięcia braków formalnych pismo pozostawiono bez rozpoznania.

    1. A. Wbrew
    2. B. Wobec
    3. C. Pomimo
    Poloniusz explains:

The expression „wobec nieusunięcia braków formalnych” indicates the cause of the administrative decision. „Pomimo” introduces a contrastive relation, not a causal one, so it would change the meaning of the sentence. „Wbrew” combines with the dative (celownik) and also does not express the required cause here.

Rule: syntactic synonymy in expressing cause

  41. 41. (C1)

W uzasadnieniu projektu wskazano, że urząd przeniesie archiwum do ... na obrzeżach miasta.

    1. A. magazynowego nowego budynku
    2. B. budynku nowego magazynowego
    3. C. nowego budynku magazynowego
    Poloniusz explains:

In the neutral word order (szyk) of a nominal group, a quality adjective (przymiotnik jakościowy), such as „nowy”, usually stands before the noun, and a relational adjective (przymiotnik relacyjny), such as „magazynowy”, stands after the noun. The expressions „magazynowego nowego budynku” and „budynku nowego magazynowego” violate this order and sound like syntactic calques.

Rule: a relational adjective follows the noun, a quality adjective precedes it

Wniosek można złożyć elektronicznie, bez ... go osobiście w urzędzie.

    1. A. konieczności podpisywać
    2. B. konieczność podpisywania
    3. C. konieczności podpisywania
    Poloniusz explains:

The preposition „bez” governs the genitive (dopełniacz), and the noun „konieczność” combines here with a verbal noun in the genitive. The correct construction is therefore „bez konieczności podpisywania”. The variant „konieczność podpisywania” has the wrong case, and „konieczności podpisywać” incorrectly combines a noun with an infinitive.

Rule: the construction bez konieczności with the genitive of a verbal noun

    Wskaż zapis niepoprawny.

    1. A. gdybyśmy uwzględnili
    2. B. gdy byśmy uwzględnili
    3. C. choćbyście protestowali
    Poloniusz explains:

The particle „by” with the personal ending is written together with the conjunction in forms such as „gdybyśmy” and „choćbyście”. The spelling „gdy byśmy” is wrong because it separates the elements that form one conjunction form with a movable personal ending. This kind of mistake often comes from treating „by” as an always separate word.

Rule: movable personal ending of the past tense and the particle by

Wskaż zdanie niepoprawne ze względu na miejsce zaimka „się”.

    1. A. W debacie często się odwoływano do danych.
    2. B. Się odwoływano do danych.
    3. C. W debacie odwoływano się do danych.
    4. D. Do danych odwoływano się często.
    Poloniusz explains:

The pronoun „się” should not open a sentence. In the construction „odwoływać się do czegoś” it is an obligatory part of the verb, but its place is after the verb form or after another stressed word. The sentence „Się odwoływano do danych” copies a foreign pattern and is incorrect in standard Polish.

Rule: the pronoun się does not open a sentence

Wybierz neutralny szyk wyrażenia: W projekcie przewidziano ... przy wejściu do budynku.

    1. A. parkingowe nowe miejsca
    2. B. nowe miejsca parkingowe
    3. C. miejsca nowe parkingowe
    Poloniusz explains:

In neutral word order (szyk), a quality adjective (przymiotnik jakościowy) usually stands before the noun, and a relational adjective (przymiotnik relacyjny) after the noun. Therefore the expression „nowe miejsca parkingowe” is correct: „nowe” denotes a quality feature, and „parkingowe” defines the type of places. The orders „parkingowe nowe miejsca” and „miejsca nowe parkingowe” violate this rule and sound like calques from languages with a more fixed word order.

Rule: a relational adjective follows the noun, a quality adjective precedes it

Wybierz poprawny początek zdania: ... powołali na wszystkie ekspertyzy, decyzja pozostanie w mocy.

    1. A. Choć się byśmy
    2. B. Choćbyśmy się
    3. C. Choćby się my
    Poloniusz explains:

In conditional and concessive constructions, the particle „by” combines with the conjunction and with the movable personal ending, so the correct form is „choćbyśmy”. The pronoun „się” takes a position after this form, not before the personal pronoun „my”. The variants „choćby się my” and „choć się byśmy” split this construction in a way that is not in accordance with the norm.

Rule: movable personal ending and the particle by with conjunctions

Wybierz wyrażenie o neutralnym szyku: W informacji prasowej zapisano, że przy dworcu powstanie ...

    1. A. nowy spożywczy sklep
    2. B. nowy sklep spożywczy
    3. C. spożywczy nowy sklep
    Poloniusz explains:

In neutral word order (szyk), a qualitative adjective such as „nowy” usually stands before the noun, while a relational adjective such as „spożywczy” stands after the noun. The arrangements „spożywczy nowy sklep” and „nowy spożywczy sklep” move the classifying adjective before the noun, which violates the neutral word order of a Polish noun phrase.

Rule: a relational adjective stands after the noun, a qualitative adjective before it

Zdanie „Posiedzenie odroczono z powodu braku kworum” można bez zmiany sensu przekształcić w zdanie: „Posiedzenie odroczono ... braku kworum”.

    1. A. w celu
    2. B. na skutek
    3. C. na przekór
    4. D. pomimo
    Poloniusz explains:

The expressions „z powodu” and „na skutek” introduce the cause of an event. „Pomimo” has a contrastive meaning, because it points to a circumstance that did not prevent the action. „W celu” means an intention or purpose, and „na przekór” expresses acting against something, so they do not preserve the meaning of the original sentence.

Rule: syntactic synonymy of causal expressions
