  1. 1. B1 · Speaking

Jak zapytać w sklepie, ile coś kosztuje?

    Show the answer

    Answer: Ile to kosztuje?

Example: Przepraszam, ile to kosztuje? A czy mogę zapłacić kartą?

    Poloniusz explains:

„Ile to kosztuje?” works everywhere: in a shop, at the hairdresser's, at a garage. You ask about the price of a service the same way: „Ile kosztuje wymiana opon?”. The shorter „ile to?” sounds curt, so it is better to keep the verb.

  2. 2. B1 · Speaking

    Jak zapytać o drogę?

    Show the answer

Answer: Przepraszam, jak dojść do dworca?

Example: Przepraszam, jak dojść do dworca? Czy to daleko stąd?

    Poloniusz explains:

„Jak dojść” asks about the way on foot, „jak dojechać” by vehicle. Plain „gdzie jest dworzec?” will also be understood, but the answer will be shorter and less useful. Add „czy to daleko” so you know whether to walk or ride.

  3. 3. B1 · Speaking

    Jak poprosić, żeby ktoś powtórzył?

    Show the answer

Answer: Czy może pani powtórzyć? Nie zrozumiałem.

Example: Przepraszam, czy może pani powtórzyć wolniej? Nie zrozumiałem ostatniego zdania.

    Poloniusz explains:

This is the most useful sentence in an oral exam and in any office. To a stranger you say „czy może pani” or „czy może pan”, never „czy możesz”. Adding „wolniej” is polite and works better than „proszę powtórzyć” alone.

  4. 4. B1 · Speaking

Jak powiedzieć, że czegoś nie rozumiesz?

    Show the answer

Answer: Nie rozumiem. Co to znaczy?

Example: Przepraszam, nie rozumiem tego słowa. Co znaczy „zaświadczenie”?

    Poloniusz explains:

„Nie rozumiem” is enough, but on its own it sounds helpless. Better to say at once what you do not understand: „nie rozumiem tego słowa”, „nie rozumiem, co mam zrobić”. Then the other person knows how to help.

  5. 5. B1 · Grammatical accuracy

    Jakiego przypadka wymaga przyimek „dzięki”?

    Show the answer

Answer: Celownika. Pytamy: dzięki komu? czemu? Na przykład: „Dzięki sąsiadce zdążyłem na pociąg.”

Poloniusz corrects a mistake: instead of „Dzięki sąsiadki!” one says „Dzięki sąsiadce.”.

    Poloniusz explains:

The preposition „dzięki” takes the dative (celownik, komu? czemu?), not the genitive. Hence „dzięki sąsiadce”, not „dzięki sąsiadki”. The difficulty usually lies not in choosing the case but in the form itself: the dative of „sąsiadka” is „sąsiadce”, with k changing to c.
