Educational vocabulary for B1, B2 and C1 Polish exams
The education section covers school, university, exams, diplomas, diploma recognition and the everyday life of a learner.
Educational vocabulary costs you points not because it is exceptionally difficult, but because it is often connected with cases (przypadki), prepositions and formal style. In the exam, you may read an announcement from a university, listen to a conversation about a course, write an application for admission to university, or speak about your education. If you know only individual words, but you cannot say "studiuję na kierunku", "przystępuję do egzaminu" or "złożyłem dokumenty do nostryfikacji dyplomu", you can easily lose points for communication and accuracy.
What the education section covers at B1, B2 and C1
At B1, the requirements cover the basics: school subjects, school supplies, school marks and types of schools. You must understand and use sentences such as: "Moja córka chodzi do szkoły podstawowej", "Syn ma sprawdzian z matematyki", "Kupiłem zeszyt, długopis i podręcznik". Information about education is also important, because it appears under the topic "człowiek".
At B2, fields of study, academic degrees and administrative roles are added, as well as exams and tests. This is the level at which you already need to be able to say: "Studiuję informatykę", "Dziekanat poprosił mnie o zaświadczenie", "Mam egzamin ustny i test pisemny". Vocabulary connected with recruitment, assessment, course credit and the organization of the academic year will also be useful.
At C1, the range is broader. It also includes school life and school problems. You may get a topic about tutoring, students' stress, relationships with teachers, the grading system, group work or students' problems. At this level, the word "nauka" is not enough. You need to be able to distinguish "uczenie się", "nauczanie", "kształcenie", "badania naukowe" and "edukację".
School, university and people
The basic distinction is simple. "Szkoła" usually refers to children and teenagers, but also to courses. "Uczelnia" or "szkoła wyższa" refers to higher education. "Uniwersytet", "politechnika" and "akademia" are types of higher education institutions.
We say: "chodzę do szkoły", but "studiuję na uniwersytecie" and "studiuję na kierunku lekarskim". With the verb "uczyć się", you most often use the genitive (dopełniacz): "Uczę się polskiego", "Uczę się historii", "Uczę się nowych słów". If you are talking about a place, you use "w" or "na": "Uczę się w liceum", "Studiuję na uczelni". You will find more combinations of this kind in the section prepositions and their government.
People in education are not only "nauczyciel" and "uczeń". At a university you will encounter the words: "student", "studentka", "wykładowca", "lektor", "promotor", "dziekan", "rektor", "pracownik dziekanatu". In a language course, we often say: "lektorka polskiego", "grupa", "poziom", "zajęcia", "obecność", "nieobecność".
Pay attention to the declension of names of people. You will say: "Rozmawiałem z wykładowcą", "Wysłałam mail do promotora", "Dostałem informację z dziekanatu". If you have trouble with endings, go back to the section cases and noun declension.
Subjects, grades, exams and course credits
At B1 you need to know the names of school subjects: "matematyka", "język polski", "historia", "biologia", "chemia", "geografia", "informatyka", "wychowanie fizyczne". In sentences, the construction "z czego?" appears very often: "Mam sprawdzian z biologii", "Dostałem dobrą ocenę z polskiego", "Piszę test z gramatyki".
At B2 and C1, exams become more important. "Egzamin" can be used with "zdawać", "zdać", "oblać", "poprawiać" or "zaliczyć". The difference is practical. "Zdaję egzamin" means that I am taking part in it. "Zdałem egzamin" means that the result is positive. "Oblałem egzamin" is colloquial, but very common. In a formal situation it is better to write: "Nie zdałem egzaminu".
At school you can have "sprawdzian", "kartkówkę", "test", "odpowiedź ustną", "pracę domową". At university you have "kolokwium", "zaliczenie", "egzamin", "sesję", "praktyki", "seminarium", "wykład" and "ćwiczenia". "Wykład" is usually more theoretical, and "ćwiczenia" more practical.
School grades require the right forms. We say: "Dostałem piątkę", "Mam trójkę z chemii", "Poprawiłem ocenę". In formal texts you will more often see "ocena pozytywna", "ocena negatywna", "wynik pozytywny", "wynik negatywny".
Diploma, nostrification and documents
A foreigner living in Poland often has to talk about educational documents. The most important words are: "świadectwo", "dyplom", "suplement do dyplomu", "zaświadczenie", "transkrypt ocen", "program studiów", "tłumaczenie przysięgłe", "oryginał", "kopia", "odpis".
"Świadectwo" usually refers to school. "Dyplom" refers to completing university studies or obtaining a qualification. "Zaświadczenie" confirms a fact, for example student status or completion of a course. "Certyfikat" usually confirms an exam result or a level of competence, for example knowledge of a language.
"Nostryfikacja" is the formal recognition of a foreign diploma. In practice, these sentences will be useful: "Chcę nostryfikować dyplom", "Złożyłem wniosek o nostryfikację dyplomu", "Uczelnia poprosiła mnie o tłumaczenie przysięgłe". We do not say *nostryfikacja dyplom, but "nostryfikacja dyplomu", because after the noun "nostryfikacja" we use the genitive (dopełniacz): czego? dyplomu.
In letters and emails, use the verbs: "złożyć dokumenty", "uzupełnić braki", "dołączyć kopię", "przesłać skan", "odebrać decyzję", "otrzymać zaświadczenie". This vocabulary is connected with formalities, so the section vocabulary: offices and formalities is also useful.
Learning a language and student life
In Polish, "uczyć się" and "studiować" do not always mean the same thing. "Uczę się polskiego" means that I am learning the language. "Studiuję polonistykę" means that I am a student in that degree programme. You can also say: "Studiuję w Polsce i uczę się polskiego na kursie".
When learning a language, these words are important: "poziom", "grupa", "kurs", "zajęcia", "lekcja", "podręcznik", "ćwiczenia", "słownik", "wymowa", "akcent", "gramatyka", "słownictwo", "pisanie", "czytanie", "słuchanie", "mówienie". In the certificate exam, the last words help you describe your own difficulties: "Największy problem mam ze słuchaniem", "Muszę poprawić pisanie", "Chcę mówić bardziej płynnie".
Student life is not only studying. These words will be useful: "akademik", "stypendium", "legitymacja studencka", "biblioteka", "koło naukowe", "praktyki", "plan zajęć", "sesja egzaminacyjna", "urlop dziekański". At C1 you may need more abstract expressions: "presja ocen", "nierówności edukacyjne", "dostęp do edukacji", "motywacja uczniów", "samodzielność studentów".

Typical mistakes made by Ukrainian, Russian, and English speakers
For Ukrainian speakers, the similarity of words and structures often has an effect.
- *Uczę polski od roku. Correct: "Uczę się polskiego od roku". The error comes from omitting "się" and using the wrong case (przypadek) after "uczyć się".
- *Wstąpiłem na uniwersytet w 2023 roku. In neutral Polish, the correct forms are: "Dostałem się na uniwersytet w 2023 roku" or "Rozpocząłem studia w 2023 roku". This is a calque from a Ukrainian verb meaning the beginning of studies.
- *Mam egzamin po matematyce. Correct: "Mam egzamin z matematyki". This is a calque in the choice of preposition (przyimek).
For Russian speakers, the problem is false friends and similar but not identical word combinations.
- *Skończyłem instytut ekonomiczny. Correct: "Ukończyłem uczelnię ekonomiczną" or "Ukończyłem studia ekonomiczne". "Instytut" in Polish does not always mean a higher education institution.
- *Zdałem dokumenty do dziekanatu. Correct: "Złożyłem dokumenty w dziekanacie" or "Złożyłem dokumenty do dziekanatu". This is a calque from the Russian verb "сдать".
- *Postąpiłem na studia. Correct: "Dostałem się na studia". This is a false friend and a calque in syntax (składnia).
For English speakers, errors mainly come from the lack of a case system in English and from different verb patterns. English has no noun endings that show what a noun is doing after a verb or a preposition, so you cannot transfer the English pattern word for word into Polish.
- *Studiuję na medycynie. More often correct: "Studiuję medycynę" or "Studiuję na kierunku lekarskim". This is a calque from English "study medicine" combined with uncertain use of "na".
- *Aplikowałem na uniwersytet. Correct: "Złożyłem podanie na uniwersytet" or "Złożyłem dokumenty na studia". "Aplikować" exists, but in this context it is often overused under the influence of English.
- *Mam dyplom w psychologii. Correct: "Mam dyplom z psychologii" or "Ukończyłem psychologię". This is a calque from "a degree in psychology".
In many sentences like these, the problem is not the word itself, but its syntax. It is worth reviewing verb government (rekcja czasownika) and inflection (odmiana) after prepositions.
What it looks like in the exam
Education belongs to the thematic catalogue at levels B1, B2 and C1. It may appear in listening comprehension, reading comprehension, writing and the oral part. You may hear a conversation about a course, read a university notice, write an e-mail to the dean's office, or talk about your education.
At B1, the written part has four modules of 30 points each, 120 points in total. According to the sample papers from March 2020, listening has 5 tasks and lasts up to 30 minutes, reading has 5 tasks and lasts 40 minutes, grammatical accuracy has 8 tasks and lasts 45 minutes, and writing lasts 75 minutes. The oral part lasts up to 15 minutes. For exams taken up to 31 December 2026, you must score at least 50% in each module of the written part separately and in the oral part.
At B2, the written part has four modules of 40 points each, 160 points in total. In the sample papers, listening has 5 tasks and lasts up to 40 minutes, reading has 5 tasks and lasts 60 minutes, grammar has 8 tasks and lasts 60 minutes, and writing lasts 90 minutes. The oral part lasts up to 15 minutes. The threshold is at least 60% in each module separately and in the oral part.
At C1, the written part also has four modules of 40 points each, 160 points in total. Listening has 5 tasks and lasts up to 40 minutes, reading has 5 tasks and lasts 60 minutes, grammar has 7 tasks and lasts 60 minutes, and writing lasts 90 minutes. The oral part lasts up to 20 minutes. The threshold is also at least 60% in each module separately and in the oral part. Points from the modules are not added together to make an average. One failed module means a failed exam.
In the grammatical accuracy module, educational vocabulary may be the material used in sentences, but what is tested is the form: case (przypadek), preposition (przyimek), aspect (aspekt), passive voice (strona bierna), participle (imiesłów), or sentence transformation. That is why simply memorising a list of words is not enough. In writing and speaking, the choice of style also matters: you speak differently to a classmate from your group than you write to the dean's office.
