Work and Career Vocabulary for the Exam

A practical guide to work vocabulary: from jobs and pay to recruitment, duties and career development.

The topic of work appears on the exam from level B1. At higher levels, you have to speak more precisely: about a position, pay, holiday leave, duties, recruitment and development. It is not enough to know the word "praca". You need typical combinations: "pracować jako", "ubiegać się o stanowisko", "mieć doświadczenie w sprzedaży", "otrzymywać wynagrodzenie".

What you need to be able to do at B1, B2 and C1

In the standards of requirements, the topic "Praca" is a separate point in the thematic catalogue.

At B1, the range is basic. You need to know the names of professions, types of work, working time, holiday leave, and pay and earnings. A candidate should be able to say: "Pracuję jako kierowca", "Mam pracę na pełny etat", "W przyszłym tygodniu biorę urlop", "Moje zarobki są stabilne".

At B2, the range expands to stanowiska, rynek pracy, kwalifikacje, wymagania, renty, emerytury, zasiłki and bezrobocie. You need to understand a job advertisement, an article about unemployment and a conversation about employment conditions. The difference between zawód and stanowisko is important.

At C1, the range expands to the organization of the workplace. A candidate speaks about firma, zespół, przełożony, dział, procedury, zakres obowiązków and warunki pracy.

This topic combines vocabulary and grammar. With names of professions, you need the plural and grammatical gender (liczba mnoga i rodzaj gramatyczny), in sentences such as "ubiegam się o pracę" verb government (rekcja czasownika) is important, and when describing experience, tenses and conjugations (czasy i koniugacje) are useful.

Profession, position and workplace

"Zawód" is a general qualification or type of work. "Stanowisko" is a specific function in a company. You can be a nauczyciel by profession, but work in the position of koordynator szkoleń. You can have the profession of księgowa and the position of główna księgowa.

The safest structures are:

  • "Pracuję jako programista w firmie informatycznej".
  • "Jestem pielęgniarką w przychodni".
  • "Z zawodu jestem elektrykiem, ale obecnie pracuję jako magazynier".
  • "Zajmuję stanowisko kierownika działu sprzedaży".
  • "Jestem zatrudniony na stanowisku specjalisty do spraw obsługi klienta".

After "jako" we usually use the nominative case (mianownik), that is, the base form: "Pracuję jako lekarz". Not: *Pracuję jako lekarzem. The form "lekarzem" is correct after the verb "być": "Jestem lekarzem".

"Pracownik" does the work. "Pracodawca" employs. "Przełożony" manages the work of a specific person. "Współpracownicy" are the people you work with.

Contract, pay and working time

On the exam, you need to understand the basic words: umowa, zatrudnienie, etat, wynagrodzenie, pensja, zarobki, premia, nadgodziny, urlop, zwolnienie lekarskie, okres próbny, wypowiedzenie.

"Pensja" and "wynagrodzenie" are close in meaning. "Wynagrodzenie" sounds more formal: "Proszę o informację o wysokości wynagrodzenia". In conversation, you can say: "Chciałbym zapytać o pensję". "Zarobki" is general information about how much someone earns: "Zarobki w tej branży rosną".

Typical combinations:

  • podpisać umowę,
  • przedłużyć umowę,
  • rozwiązać umowę,
  • pracować na pełny etat,
  • pracować na pół etatu,
  • mieć elastyczny czas pracy,
  • pracować zmianowo,
  • dostać podwyżkę,
  • otrzymać premię,
  • wziąć urlop.

We do not say: *robić urlop. Correct forms are: "brać urlop", "wziąć urlop", "być na urlopie". We also do not say: *dostać pensję za ręce. Correct is: "dostać pensję do ręki" or, formally, "otrzymać wynagrodzenie".

For money, review numerals and their syntax (liczebniki i ich składnia): "Zarabiam 5000 złotych", "Dostałem 2 premie", but "Dostałem 5 premii".

Job interview and looking for work

"Rozmowa kwalifikacyjna" means a recruitment interview. In everyday speech people say "rozmowa o pracę", but for the exam it is worth knowing the official form. A person who wants to get a job is a "kandydat" or "kandydatka". A company "rekrutuje", "prowadzi rekrutację" or "szuka pracownika".

Useful verbs:

  • szukać pracy,
  • znaleźć pracę,
  • aplikować na stanowisko,
  • ubiegać się o stanowisko,
  • wysłać CV,
  • napisać list motywacyjny,
  • zaprosić kogoś na rozmowę,
  • przejść rekrutację,
  • dostać ofertę pracy,
  • przyjąć albo odrzucić ofertę.

In an interview we talk about experience and skills: "Mam trzyletnie doświadczenie w obsłudze klienta", "Znam język angielski na poziomie komunikatywnym", "Potrafię pracować pod presją czasu".

At B2 and C1 it is better to avoid empty adjectives. Instead of "Jestem odpowiedzialny i komunikatywny", say: "Jestem odpowiedzialny, bo przez dwa lata samodzielnie prowadziłem projekty dla klientów". When describing qualities, adjective and pronoun declension will be useful.

Duties, working conditions and career development

"Obowiązki" are the things you have to do at work. In job advertisements you will see "zakres obowiązków". Natural sentences are: "Do moich obowiązków należy kontakt z klientami", "Odpowiadam za dokumenty", "Zajmuję się fakturami", "Przygotowuję raporty".

Instead of the general "robię", use more precise verbs: "prowadzę szkolenia", "obsługuję klientów", "zarządzam zespołem", "koordynuję projekty", "nadzoruję pracę magazynu".

"Warunki pracy" means working hours, workplace, atmosphere, pay, safety, remote work, commuting and relationships in the team. You can write: "Warunki pracy są dobre, ponieważ firma oferuje elastyczny grafik i możliwość rozwoju".

"Kariera" also means professional development. Useful combinations: "zdobywać doświadczenie", "podnosić kwalifikacje", "zmienić branżę", "awansować", "dostać awans", "rozwijać kompetencje", "ukończyć szkolenie". At C1, this sounds good: "Chciałbym rozwijać się w obszarze zarządzania projektami".

Example sentences to use

  1. "Od dwóch lat pracuję jako opiekun osób starszych w prywatnej firmie".
  2. "Z zawodu jestem mechanikiem, ale obecnie szukam pracy w magazynie".
  3. "Chciałabym zapytać, czy to stanowisko jest na pełny etat".
  4. "Do moich obowiązków należy obsługa klientów i przygotowywanie dokumentów".
  5. "W poprzedniej pracy odpowiadałem za kontakt z dostawcami".
  6. "Mam doświadczenie w sprzedaży i dobrze znam programy biurowe".
  7. "Zależy mi na stabilnym zatrudnieniu i możliwości rozwoju zawodowego".
  8. "W przyszłym roku chciałabym ukończyć kurs i ubiegać się o awans".

Typical mistakes made by Ukrainian-, Russian-, and English-speaking learners

Among Ukrainian-speaking learners, calques from similar constructions are common.

  • *Pracuję lekarzem. Correct: "Pracuję jako lekarz" or "Jestem lekarzem".
  • *Idę na pracę o ósmej. Correct: "Idę do pracy o ósmej".
  • *Mam doświadczenie po sprzedaży. Correct: "Mam doświadczenie w sprzedaży".

Among Russian-speaking learners, the problem is false friends and constructions that are similar but not identical.

  • *Jestem na stanowisku menedżera sprzedaż. Correct: "Jestem na stanowisku menedżera sprzedaży".
  • *Zarabiam dobre pieniądze na tej pracy. Correct: "Dobrze zarabiam w tej pracy" or "Mam dobre zarobki w tej pracy".
  • *Napisałem oświadczenie do pracy. Correct, if you mean recruitment: "Napisałem podanie o pracę" or "Wysłałem CV".

If you are an English speaker, mistakes often come from the lack of grammatical cases (przypadki) in English and from translating verbs literally. English often keeps the noun form the same and uses a preposition such as "for" or "in"; Polish changes endings and uses fixed combinations with particular verbs and nouns.

  • *Aplikowałem dla tej pracy. Correct: "Aplikowałem na to stanowisko" or "Ubiegałem się o tę pracę".
  • *Jestem odpowiedzialny dla raportów. Correct: "Jestem odpowiedzialny za raporty".
  • *Mam pięć lat doświadczenia jako obsługa klienta. Correct: "Mam pięć lat doświadczenia w obsłudze klienta".

What this looks like in the exam

The topic of work can appear in any module. In listening, it may be a dialogue about a job interview, a schedule or holiday leave. In reading: a job advertisement, an e-mail from a company or a text about the labour market. In writing: a reply to an advertisement, a description of experience or a message to an employer. In the oral part: a profession, plans, working conditions or unemployment.

Under the current regulation of 14 February 2025, the exam has four written-part modules: listening comprehension, reading comprehension, grammatical accuracy and writing, as well as an oral part. The thresholds described apply to exams until 31 December 2026.

At B1, the written part has four modules of 30 points each, 120 points in total. The passing threshold is at least 50% from each written-part module separately and from the oral part. According to the sample papers from March 2020, listening has 5 tasks, reading has 5 tasks, grammar has 8 tasks, and writing lasts 75 minutes.

At B2, the written part has four modules of 40 points each, 160 points in total. The passing threshold is at least 60% from each module separately and from the oral part. In the sample papers, listening has 5 tasks, reading has 5 tasks, grammar has 8 tasks, and writing lasts 90 minutes.

At C1, the written part also has four modules of 40 points each, 160 points in total. The passing threshold is at least 60% from each module separately and from the oral part. In the sample papers, listening has 5 tasks, reading has 5 tasks, grammar has 7 tasks, and writing lasts 90 minutes.

In the grammatical accuracy module, work-related vocabulary may only be the context, but the form will be assessed. At B1, you may choose the correct form of a noun, pronoun, verb or preposition. At B2, there are, among other things, participles (imiesłowy), the passive voice (strona bierna) and changing complex sentences into single clauses. At C1, there are no tasks in grammar where you choose one of the given forms, so you have to create the forms yourself.
