Vocabulary and collocations: how to learn words
Do not write down only single words. For the exam and real life, you need ready-made combinations that sound natural.
Learners often know many Polish words, but still write and speak unnaturally. The reason is simple: a word rarely works on its own. In Polish it is not only "decyzja", but "podjąć decyzję". Not only "wpływ", but "mieć wpływ na coś". Not only "zależeć", but "zależeć od czegoś". Such combinations decide whether your utterance sounds Polish. At B1, many simple everyday phrases are enough. At B2 and C1, you already need to choose words precisely, recognize style, and avoid translating from your native language.
Learn a word together with its typical surroundings
A collocation is a typical combination of words, that is, one that Poles naturally say together. You can say "popełnić błąd", but people do not say *zrobić błąd in careful Polish. You can say "odnieść sukces", but not *dostać sukces. The noun (rzeczownik) "błąd" or "sukces" on its own is not enough.
Write down a new word as a small package:
- verb (czasownik) plus noun: "podjąć decyzję", "złożyć wniosek", "prowadzić rozmowę", "ponieść koszty";
- noun plus adjective (przymiotnik): "ważna sprawa", "trudna decyzja", "silny argument", "poważny problem";
- verb plus preposition (przyimek): "zależeć od", "polegać na", "wpływać na", "korzystać z";
- a whole sentence: "Muszę złożyć wniosek w urzędzie".
The best flashcard is not in the form "wniosek - application". A better flashcard looks like this: "złożyć wniosek o pobyt", "rozpatrzyć wniosek", "odrzucić wniosek". You immediately see which verb to use and which case (przypadek) appears next. If the problem is choosing the case after a verb, go back to the section on verb government.
What is enough for B1, and what you need for B2 and C1
At B1, build vocabulary around everyday topics: people, home, daily life, travel, health, work, shopping, services, education. You need phrases for giving information, asking, apologizing, thanking, inviting, expressing an opinion and a need. Learn practical sentences: "Chciałbym umówić wizytę", "Mam problem z rachunkiem", "Czy mogę prosić o informację?".
At B2, more social and abstract topics appear: the labor market, unemployment, the justice system, addictions, media, the Internet, environmental problems, politics, economics, customs. Here "problem jest duży" is not enough. Better: "Problem dotyczy rynku mieszkaniowego", "To rozwiązanie może mieć negatywne skutki", "Autor tekstu przedstawia mocny argument". At B2, argumentation is important, so collect collocations for opinions: "moim zdaniem", "z jednej strony", "warto podkreślić", "trudno się zgodzić z opinią, że...".
At C1, you need precise, formal and evaluative vocabulary. You should not only say that something is bad, but whether it is "niepokojące", "kontrowersyjne", "nieuzasadnione", "szkodliwe społecznie" or "mało przekonujące". Topics such as social activity, prevention, the health care system, scientific research, the social role of the media and stereotypes also appear. At this level, it is worth keeping separate lists: neutral style, official style, journalistic style.
The verb is the center of the sentence
In Polish, very often it is the verb that imposes the rest of the sentence. That is why you should not learn only topic-related nouns. Learn the verbs that go with them.
Example from the topic "praca":
- "szukać pracy";
- "ubiegać się o stanowisko";
- "spełniać wymagania";
- "zdobyć doświadczenie";
- "otrzymać wynagrodzenie";
- "stracić pracę".
Example from the topic "zdrowie":
- "umówić wizytę";
- "mieć objawy";
- "wykonać badania";
- "przyjmować leki";
- "wrócić do zdrowia";
- "cierpieć na chorobę".
With each verb, write down a checking question: "kogo? co?", "czego?", "komu?", "z kim?", "na co?". This helps you avoid mistakes such as *czekam ciebie instead of "czekam na ciebie". If you mix up verbs with prepositions, the section on prepositions and their government will be useful.
Fixed phrases: learn them as one unit
A fixed phrase is a combination that is not worth breaking into parts when you speak. Treat it like one long word. For example: "w związku z tym", "z tego powodu", "w razie potrzeby", "pod tym względem", "w każdym razie", "na pierwszy rzut oka".
Such phrases are very useful in writing and speaking. They organize what you say. Instead of many short sentences, you can build a logical text:
"Nie mogłem przyjść na spotkanie. Z tego powodu proszę o nowy termin".
"Ceny mieszkań rosną. W związku z tym wiele osób odkłada decyzję o zakupie".
Learn them by function, not alphabetically. Make lists:
- cause: "z powodu", "ze względu na", "dlatego że";
- result: "w związku z tym", "dlatego", "w rezultacie";
- contrast: "mimo to", "jednak", "z drugiej strony";
- example: "na przykład", "między innymi", "choćby";
- summary: "podsumowując", "krótko mówiąc", "ogólnie rzecz biorąc".
At B1, the most common linking words are enough. At B2 and C1, you need more variety, because in a longer answer repeating "ale", "bo", "dlatego" quickly lowers the quality of the text. If you want to develop this area, see conjunctions and complex sentences.
False friends and word-for-word translation
False friends are words that are similar in two languages but have a different meaning or a different use. They are especially dangerous because they sound familiar. Ukrainian-speaking and Russian-speaking learners often trust Slavic similarity. English-speaking learners often transfer English word combinations directly into Polish, but Polish chooses its own verbs, prepositions and collocations, so a literal English pattern may sound unnatural or be wrong.
Do not write only: "aktualny - current". Write examples: "aktualny adres", "aktualne informacje", but "obecny prezydent", "obecna sytuacja". Do not write only: "ewentualnie - possibly". Write: "Możemy spotkać się jutro, ewentualnie w piątek", meaning "jeśli nie jutro, to w piątek". This does not mean the English word "eventually".
A good exercise is a list of "suspicious words". If a word looks almost the same as in your language, check it in a sentence. Only then write it in your notebook. The section typical mistakes: interference from the native language is also helpful, because many vocabulary problems come precisely from transferring foreign combinations into Polish.
Example sentences to memorize
Copy these sentences, and then change one element: "wniosek o wymianę karty" to "wniosek o przyjęcie na studia", "remont mieszkania" to "naprawę samochodu". This way you learn a pattern, not just one sentence.
Typical mistakes made by Ukrainian-, Russian- and English-speaking learners
- *robić decyzję - podjąć decyzję. This mistake often comes from translating the English "make a decision" or from using the verb (czasownik) "robić" too generally.
- *czekać kogoś - czekać na kogoś. The source is often a Ukrainian or Russian construction without the Polish preposition (przyimek) "na".
- *zależeć od pogody? No, the correct form here is: zależeć od pogody. But the mistake often sounds like this: *zależeć z pogody. It comes from mixing the prepositions "od" and "z".
- *brać udział w konkursie as "przyjmować udział" - brać udział w konkursie. This is a calque from East Slavic combinations similar to "przyjmować udział".
- *mieć wpływ na decyzję as "mieć wpływ dla decyzji" - mieć wpływ na decyzję. The mistake comes from translating a preposition from your native language, especially English "for". Polish prepositions do not map one-to-one onto English.
- *aktualnie mieszkam w Krakowie, when you mean "obecnie" - obecnie mieszkam w Krakowie. "Aktualnie" can be correct, but in many situations "obecnie" sounds more natural; the English "actually" also confuses the meaning.
- *ewentualnie dostałem odpowiedź - w końcu dostałem odpowiedź. This is a calque from the English "eventually". Polish "ewentualnie" means rather "or, if necessary".
- *kontrolować egzamin in the sense of "sprawdzać, panować nad" - sprawdzać egzamin albo kontrolować sytuację. The English "control" is broader, and Polish "kontrolować" does not fit every context.
- *aplikować na uniwersytet - ubiegać się o przyjęcie na studia. "Aplikować" exists in Polish, but in many official texts "ubiegać się o" sounds better.
With mistakes like these, it is not enough to memorize the correct word. You need to memorize the whole combination and an example sentence.
Work plan for the next week
- Choose 2 topics from the standards, for example "praca" and "zdrowie".
- For each topic, write down 20 combinations, not single words.
- Next to each verb, add the question: "kogo?", "czego?", "na co?", "z kim?".
- Create 10 sentences that you could really say in Poland.
- Mark 5 false friends from your language and check them in sentences.
- Record a short spoken answer using the new collocations.
- The next day, correct the text or recording and replace general words with more precise ones.
If you do not know where new word forms come from, combine vocabulary study with the section on word formation (słowotwórstwo). At B2 and C1, understanding word families helps a lot: "decydować", "decyzja", "decyzyjny", "niezdecydowany".
