Conjunctions and compound and complex sentences at B1, B2 and C1
Compound and complex sentences help you write coherently, but in the exam they often cost points because of the wrong conjunction, word order or comma.
Conjunctions (spójniki) connect words and clauses, but in the exam you also need to know where to put a comma, how to recognize a subordinate clause (zdanie podrzędne), and how to transform a compound or complex sentence (zdanie złożone). This topic appears in the standards for B1, B2 and C1.
Coordinate and subordinate clauses: the simplest division
A compound or complex sentence has at least two predicates (orzeczenia), that is, two verb forms. For example: "Zadzwoniłem do urzędu i umówiłem wizytę". There are two verbs here: "zadzwoniłem" and "umówiłem".
A coordinate compound sentence (zdanie współrzędnie złożone) joins two parts of similar importance. You can often split it into two simple sentences.
- "Wypełniłem formularz i wysłałem go przez internet."
- "Wypełniłem formularz. Wysłałem go przez internet."
At B1 you need to know, among others: "oraz", "a także", "lub", "albo", "czy", "dlatego", "ale". At B2, among others, the following are added: "lecz", "toteż", "czyli", "to jest", "jednak", "natomiast", "zaś". At C1: "po czym", "a potem", "a następnie", "jak też", "zarówno ..., jak i ...", "bądź", "zatem", "wobec tego", "ani", "mimo to", "jednakże".
A sentence with subordination (zdanie podrzędnie złożone) has a main part and a dependent part. The dependent part answers a question: dlaczego?, po co?, kiedy?, pod jakim warunkiem?, mimo czego?, jaki?, który?
- "Nie przyszedłem, ponieważ byłem chory."
- "Zadzwonię, kiedy będę miał wynik."
- "To jest urząd, w którym złożyłem wniosek."
Cases (przypadki) and government (rekcja) are important too. You say: "czekam na decyzję", so also: "Decyzja, na którą czekam, jeszcze nie przyszła". Review verb government (rekcja czasownika) and syntax and word order.
The most important conjunctions by meaning
| Meaning | Typical conjunctions | Comma | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| linking | i, oraz, a także, jak też | usually no comma before "i", "oraz" | Pracuję i uczę się polskiego. |
| choice | albo, lub, czy, bądź | usually no comma | Wyślę dokument pocztą albo zaniosę go osobiście. |
| contrast | ale, lecz, jednak, natomiast, zaś, jednakże | usually a comma before the conjunction | Chciałem przyjść, ale byłem chory. |
| result | dlatego, toteż, zatem, wobec tego | usually a comma before the conjunction | Pociąg się spóźnił, dlatego nie zdążyłem na spotkanie. |
| cause | bo, ponieważ, dlatego że, gdyż | comma before the subordinate clause | Nie złożyłem wniosku, ponieważ brakowało mi dokumentu. |
| purpose | żeby, aby, by | comma before the purpose clause | Uczę się polskiego, żeby zdać egzamin B1. |
| condition | jeśli, jeżeli ..., to ..., gdyby ..., to ..., o ile | comma separates the condition | Jeśli dostanę certyfikat, złożę wniosek. |
| concession | choć, chociaż, mimo że, pomimo że, mimo to | comma separates the parts of the sentence | Chociaż byłem zmęczony, napisałem podanie. |
| time | kiedy, gdy, zanim, nim, jak tylko, dopóki, aż | comma separates the time clause | Zadzwonię, jak tylko dostanę decyzję. |
| gradation of dependence | im ..., tym ... | comma between the parts | Im więcej ćwiczę, tym mniej boję się egzaminu. |
Learn conjunctions by function, not as a list of translations. "Bo" and "ponieważ" express cause, but "ponieważ" fits written texts better. "Żeby", "aby" and "by" express purpose, but "aby" and "by" are more official.
Commas with conjunctions (spójniki): exam rules
The safest rule: put a comma before a subordinate clause (zdanie podrzędne). If the second part begins with "że", "żeby", "ponieważ", "kiedy", "gdy", "jeśli", "jeżeli", "gdyby", "chociaż", "mimo że", "który", a comma will usually be needed.
- "Wiem, że muszę powtórzyć gramatykę."
- "Zostanę w domu, jeśli urząd nie odpisze."
- "To jest osoba, która pomagała mi w tłumaczeniu dokumentów."
Do not put a comma before every "i" or "oraz".
- Correct: "Wstałem wcześnie i pojechałem do pracy."
- Incorrect:
*Wstałem wcześnie, i pojechałem do pracy.
A comma is needed before "ale", "lecz", "natomiast", "jednak" when they join clauses.
- "Rozumiem pytanie, ale nie znam odpowiedzi."
- "Chciałem wysłać dokumenty online, jednak system nie działał."
Treat multiword conjunctions such as "dlatego że", "mimo że", "pomimo że" as one unit. Do not split them with a comma in the middle if they function as a single conjunction.
- Correct: "Nie przyszedłem, dlatego że byłem chory."
- Incorrect:
*Nie przyszedłem dlatego, że byłem chory.

Condition, cause, purpose, result and concession
Cause (przyczyna) answers the question "dlaczego?". The most common conjunctions are "bo", "ponieważ", "dlatego że", "gdyż".
- "Nie odebrałem telefonu, bo byłem w pracy."
- "Proszę o nowy termin, ponieważ nie mogę przyjść w poniedziałek."
Purpose (cel) answers the question "po co?". We use "żeby", "aby", "by". After "żeby", the verb often has a form with a personal particle: "żebym", "żebyś", "żebyśmy", "żebyście".
- "Uczę się, żeby zdać egzamin."
- "Chciałbym, żeby urząd wysłał decyzję pocztą."
A condition (warunek) says what has to happen. At B1, the constructions "jeśli", "jeżeli ..., to ...", "gdyby ..., to ...", "im ..., tym ..." appear. At B2 and C1, more difficult variants are added, for example "o ile", "jeżeliby", "chociażby". The conditional mood (tryb przypuszczający) is important, so review the imperative and conditional moods (tryb rozkazujący i przypuszczający).
- "Jeśli zdam egzamin, złożę wniosek o pobyt rezydenta."
- "Gdybym miał więcej czasu, pisałbym dłuższe teksty po polsku."
Concession (przyzwolenie) shows a contrast: something happened despite an obstacle.
- "Chociaż byłem zmęczony, poszedłem na lekcję."
- "Mimo że padało, pojechaliśmy do urzędu."
Result (skutek) shows the outcome of a situation.
- "Zgubiłem numer sprawy, dlatego musiałem zadzwonić do urzędu."
- "Dokument był nieczytelny, zatem poproszono mnie o nowy skan."
Multi-clause sentences (zdania wielokrotnie złożone) and transformations (przekształcenia)
A multi-clause sentence has more than two predicates (orzeczenia). At B2 and C1, this is a normal part of the requirements. You have to control the relationships between the parts.
- "Kiedy wróciłem z pracy, zobaczyłem wiadomość z urzędu i od razu zadzwoniłem, żeby umówić wizytę."
This sentence has a time element, the main action, a second action and a purpose.
At B2 and C1, transformations are also important: a compound or complex sentence (zdanie złożone) into a simple sentence (zdanie pojedyncze), or the other way round.
"Michel przyjechał do Polski, dlatego że chciał studiować slawistykę."
"Michel przyjechał do Polski z powodu planów studiowania slawistyki."
"Kolega namawiał nas, żebyśmy wyjechali wcześnie."
"Kolega namawiał nas na wczesny wyjazd."
At higher levels, participles (imiesłowy) help, for example "pisząc", "zrobiwszy", "przygotowany". Review participles. A participle is supposed to shorten the sentence, but it must not change the meaning.
Example sentences to memorize
- "Nie mogę przyjść na spotkanie, ponieważ mam wizytę u lekarza."
- "Wyślę dokumenty dzisiaj albo zaniosę je jutro osobiście."
- "Zadzwonię do sekretariatu, żeby zapytać o termin egzaminu."
- "Jeśli dostanę wynik w tym tygodniu, od razu złożę wniosek."
- "Chociaż mieszkam w Polsce od kilku lat, nadal robię błędy w przecinkach."
- "To jest formularz, który trzeba podpisać na ostatniej stronie."
- "Nie znałem numeru sprawy, dlatego urzędniczka nie mogła mi pomóc."
- "Im częściej piszę po polsku, tym łatwiej buduję dłuższe zdania."
Typical mistakes made by Ukrainian, Russian and English speakers
Ukrainian:
*Zrobię to, żeby zdałem egzamin.Correct: "Zrobię to, żebym zdał egzamin" or "Zrobię to, żeby zdać egzamin". The mistake comes from similarity to the Ukrainian construction of purpose, where there is no Polish "żebym" with a movable personal ending.*Chociaż miałem czas, ale nie zadzwoniłem.Correct: "Chociaż miałem czas, nie zadzwoniłem" or "Miałem czas, ale nie zadzwoniłem". This is a syntactic calque from Ukrainian. In Polish, we usually do not combine "chociaż" and "ale" in one pattern.
Russian:
*Autobus, którego czekam, spóźnia się.Correct: "Autobus, na który czekam, spóźnia się". The source of the mistake is the Russian government of the verb "ждать" and the lack of a preposition corresponding to Polish "czekać na".*Powiedział, co nie przyjdzie.Correct: "Powiedział, że nie przyjdzie". This is a false friend: Russian "что" can correspond to Polish "że", but Polish "co" does not introduce this kind of clause after the verb "powiedzieć".
English:
*Mam nadzieję, że zdać egzamin.Correct: "Mam nadzieję, że zdam egzamin" or "Mam nadzieję zdać egzamin". The mistake comes from copying English "I hope to pass". After "że" you need a full verb form, not the infinitive (bezokolicznik).*Uczę się polskiego dla zdać egzamin.Correct: "Uczę się polskiego, żeby zdać egzamin" or "Uczę się polskiego, aby zdać egzamin". This is a calque from "in order to". Polish does not use "dla" with the infinitive. Purpose is normally expressed with "żeby" or "aby" plus an infinitive when the subject is the same.*Nie wiem czy urząd jest otwarty.Correct: "Nie wiem, czy urząd jest otwarty". In English, there is often no comma before "if" or "whether". In Polish, a subordinate clause (zdanie podrzędne) with "czy" must be separated with a comma.
What this looks like in the exam
Conjunctions (spójniki) and complex sentences (zdania złożone) appear mainly in the "grammatical accuracy" module, but they also affect writing and speaking. The exam has four modules in the written part: listening comprehension, reading comprehension, grammatical accuracy and writing, as well as an oral part.
At B1, in the sample papers from March 2020, the grammatical accuracy module has 8 tasks and lasts 45 minutes. The whole module is worth 30 points. In task II, you have to complete the conjunctions from the box, one conjunction is extra, and the scoring is 5 x 0.5 points. Complex sentences can also appear in transformations. The passing threshold at B1 is at least 50% in each module of the written part separately and in the oral part.
At B2, the grammatical accuracy module has 8 tasks, 60 minutes and 40 points. The task types include, among others, changing complex sentences into simple sentences. You have to choose a construction appropriate to the style of the text: private, official, administrative or media style. The passing threshold at B2 is at least 60% in each module separately and in the oral part.
At C1, the grammatical accuracy module has 7 tasks, 60 minutes and 40 points. In the sample papers there are no closed grammar tasks: you have to create the forms yourself. Complex sentences, transformations and the stylistic value of syntactic constructions are therefore especially important. The passing threshold at C1 is at least 60% in each module separately and in the oral part.
Points from the modules are not added together into an average. Excellent writing is not enough if grammar is below the threshold.
What to review before the exam
