Perfective and imperfective aspect (aspekt) in the exam
Aspect decides whether you are talking about a process, a habit, an attempt or the result of an action.
Verb aspect (aspekt czasownika) is one of those categories that costs points on the exam, because knowing the tense form is not enough. You also have to choose whether the action was, is, or will be a process, a habit, an attempt, or a completed action with a result. In the standards of requirements, the aspect of perfective and imperfective verbs appears already at B1, and then returns at B2 and C1 in more difficult sentences, with moods (tryby), negation (przeczenie), the passive voice (strona bierna), participles (imiesłowy), and syntax (składnia).
What aspect really means
An imperfective verb (czasownik niedokonany) presents an action as a process, duration, repetition, or the fact that something was happening. It does not say whether the action was completed successfully.
A perfective verb (czasownik dokonany) presents an action as a whole and usually emphasizes the result. It says that something was done, started, ended, or happened once.
The simplest test is this: if you can ask "co robiłeś?" or "jak długo?", you often need the imperfective aspect (aspekt niedokonany). If you can ask "co zrobiłeś?" or "czy jest rezultat?", you often need the perfective aspect (aspekt dokonany).
Compare:
| Situation | Imperfective | Perfective |
|---|---|---|
| Process | Pisałem mail do urzędu przez godzinę. | Napisałem mail do urzędu i wysłałem go rano. |
| Habit | Codziennie czytam wiadomości po polsku. | Dziś przeczytałem trzy wiadomości po polsku. |
| Attempt | Długo otwierałem drzwi, ale zamek się zaciął. | Otworzyłem drzwi i wszedłem do mieszkania. |
| Duration | Uczyłam się do egzaminu cały weekend. | Nauczyłam się nowych form czasownika. |
| Planned result | Będę wypełniać formularz po pracy. | Wypełnię formularz po pracy. |
| Prohibition | Nie jedz w autobusie. | Nie zjedz całego ciasta przed gośćmi. |
Do not learn aspect as a list of "nice pairs". Learn it in a sentence. The same verb in a different context may require a different aspect.
Aspect pairs and ways of forming them
An aspect pair (para aspektowa) is two verbs with a very similar meaning: one imperfective, the other perfective. Example: pisać - napisać, czytać - przeczytać, robić - zrobić.
The most common ways of forming pairs:
A prefix (przedrostek), that is, an element at the beginning of the verb. Pisać - napisać. Czytać - przeczytać. Gotować - ugotować. Robić - zrobić.
A change of stem or suffix (temat lub przyrostek). Kupować - kupić. Dawać - dać. Zaczynać - zacząć. Kończyć - skończyć.
A different verb in the pair. Brać - wziąć. Kłaść - położyć. Mówić - powiedzieć. Wracać - wrócić.
Be careful with prefixes. They often not only make the perfective aspect, but also change the meaning. Pisać - napisać is a good pair. But pisać - przepisać already has a different meaning, because it means copying a text or writing out a prescription. At C1, the standard also requires verbs with prefixes that give a specific meaning, for example prze-, so the rule "add a prefix" is not enough. You have to know the meaning of the whole verb. Here it is worth combining the study of aspect with the section Verbs of motion and prefixes.
Aspect (aspekt) and tense (czas)
Verbs in the imperfective aspect (aspekt niedokonany) have the present tense (czas teraźniejszy), the past tense (czas przeszły), and the compound future tense (czas przyszły złożony).
Mówię teraz po polsku. Wczoraj mówiłem po polsku w urzędzie. Jutro będę mówił po polsku na rozmowie.
Verbs in the perfective aspect (aspekt dokonany) do not have a true present tense. The form looks like the present tense, but it means the future.
Napiszę podanie wieczorem. Zrobię zakupy po pracy. Odpowiem na mail jutro rano.
That is why the sentence *Teraz napiszę podanie przez godzinę is incorrect if you mean an action that is happening now. Correct: Teraz piszę podanie. If you are talking about a plan and a result, say: Napiszę podanie wieczorem.
In the past tense, both aspects are possible, but they mean different things.
Wczoraj pisałem reklamację, ale jej nie skończyłem. Wczoraj napisałem reklamację i wysłałem ją przez ePUAP.
In the future, the choice also changes the meaning.
Będę czytać umowę wieczorem. This is a process. Przeczytam umowę wieczorem. This is a result.
If you mix up future tense forms, go back to the section Tenses and conjugations, because aspect and tense work together.
Modal verbs (czasowniki modalne), negation (przeczenie), and the imperative mood (tryb rozkazujący)
After modal verbs such as muszę, mogę, chcę, powinienem, trzeba, warto, you choose either a perfective or an imperfective infinitive. The modal verb expresses obligation, possibility, or desire. Aspect says how you view the action.
Muszę uczyć się polskiego codziennie. This is a regular obligation. Muszę nauczyć się tej listy czasowników do piątku. This is an obligation with a result.
Chcę oglądać polskie filmy bez napisów. This is a habit or a skill. Chcę obejrzeć ten film w weekend. This is one specific action.
Nie mogę znaleźć karty pobytu. I am looking and I do not have a result. Nie mogę szukać karty teraz, bo jestem w pracy. I do not have the possibility of doing the action.
In negation, aspect is especially important. The imperfective often says that the action did not take place at all or is not needed. The perfective often says that there is no result.
Nie czytałem tej umowy. This means: I did not do this action. Nie przeczytałem tej umowy. This means: I do not have the completed result.
In the imperative mood, the perfective aspect often gives an instruction to carry out one specific action, while the imperfective says something about behavior, a process, or a prohibition.
Napisz do mnie po spotkaniu. Pisz wyraźnie, bo urzędnik musi to przeczytać. Nie podpisuj dokumentu bez czytania. Nie zapomnij paszportu.
You will find more about command forms in the section The imperative and conditional moods (tryb rozkazujący i przypuszczający), and more about negation and cases (przypadki) after negation in the section Negation and the genitive of negation (dopełniacz negacji).

Typical mistakes made by Ukrainian, Russian and English speakers
Ukrainian speakers
*Ja już czytałem ten regulamin, więc wiem, co podpisałem.Correct: Już przeczytałem ten regulamin, więc wiem, co podpisałem. The mistake comes from similarity to Ukrainian, where a similar verb can in practice handle the situation, but in Polish the result requires a perfective form (forma dokonana).*Będę napisać podanie jutro.Correct: Napiszę podanie jutro or Będę pisać podanie jutro. This is a syntactic calque and a mixing of the simple future (przyszłość prosta) with the compound future (przyszłość złożona).*Nie mogę rozumieć tego pisma.Correct: Nie mogę zrozumieć tego pisma. The point is that the result of understanding is missing, so in Polish the perfective aspect (aspekt dokonany) is natural.
Russian speakers
*Ja skończyłem pisać dokument i teraz będę go wysłać.Correct: Skończyłem pisać dokument i teraz go wyślę. The mistake comes from transferring a future-tense pattern with an auxiliary verb into a place where Polish needs a perfective form.*Nie trzeba zapłacić teraz, można później.Correct: Nie trzeba płacić teraz, można później. In negation with "nie trzeba", we often talk about the lack of obligation to perform an action, so we use the imperfective aspect (aspekt niedokonany).*On długo zadzwonił do przychodni.Correct: On długo dzwonił do przychodni. "Długo" describes a process or repeated attempts, so the imperfective aspect is needed.
English speakers
*I read this contract yesterday, so today I sign itas a calque:*Czytałem tę umowę wczoraj, więc dziś ją podpiszę.Correct: Przeczytałem tę umowę wczoraj, więc dziś ją podpiszę. English does not have this kind of perfective - imperfective aspect category, so it is easy to lose the result.*Teraz zrobię obiad.Correct if this is a decision about the future: Teraz zrobię obiad. But if the action is already in progress, the correct form is: Teraz robię obiad. The mistake comes from translating the English present continuous without checking aspect.*Nie znalazłem pracy przez trzy miesiące.Correct when you mean the process: Przez trzy miesiące szukałem pracy. Correct when you mean the result: Nie znalazłem pracy. An English sentence with for three months often tempts you to combine duration with a perfective verb.
What it looks like in the exam
Aspect (aspekt) belongs to grammatical accuracy. This module is a separate part of the B1, B2 and C1 exam. According to the standards of requirements, the candidate is expected to recognize, use and form the perfective aspect (aspekt dokonany) and the imperfective aspect (aspekt niedokonany), form perfective forms from imperfective ones, and know the meaning and syntactic use of both aspects.
At B1, in the sample paper, the grammar module has 8 tasks and lasts 45 minutes. One of the tasks concerns aspect and moods (tryby): you have to underline the correct form, 10 x 0.5 points. The whole module is worth 30 points. To pass the B1 exam, for exams held up to 31 December 2026, you must obtain at least 50% in each written-module separately and in the oral part. The points are not averaged.
At B2, in the sample paper, the grammar module has 8 tasks and lasts 60 minutes. There is a task on aspect and the past tense (czas przeszły) and future tense (czas przyszły). The whole module is worth 40 points. At B2, the threshold is at least 60% in each module separately and in the oral part, also for exams held up to 31 December 2026.
At C1, in the sample paper, the grammar module has 7 tasks and lasts 60 minutes. The share of closed tasks decreases: at C1 there are no tasks where you only choose one of the given forms. You have to form the word yourself. Aspect may appear with tenses, prefixes (przedrostki), the passive voice (strona bierna), participles (imiesłowy) and sentence transformations. The threshold at C1 is at least 60% in each module separately and in the oral part, for exams held up to 31 December 2026.
These thresholds are based on the Regulation of the Minister of Science and Higher Education of 14 February 2025 on examinations in Polish as a foreign language, Journal of Laws 2025, item 217. The thresholds after 1 January 2027 are not known, because there is no new implementing act yet.
What to revise before the exam
- The most common pairs: robić - zrobić, pisać - napisać, czytać - przeczytać, kupować - kupić, brać - wziąć, mówić - powiedzieć.
- The difference between a process and a result in the past and future tenses.
- Forms after muszę, mogę, chcę, powinienem, trzeba and warto.
- Negation: Nie czytałem umowy versus Nie przeczytałem umowy.
- Orders and prohibitions: Napisz, Pisz, Nie pisz, Nie zapomnij.
- Verbs with prefixes, because a prefix often changes not only the aspect, but also the meaning.
