Tenses and conjugations for B1 and B2
A verb determines who performs an action, when and how, so tense errors quickly cost you points.
Tenses (czasy) and conjugations (koniugacje) are an area where you have to create the form yourself: pracuję, pracowałem, będę pracować, pójdę, zawiozę, moglibyśmy. In the exam, a mistake in a verb ending often spoils the whole sentence. The hardest forms are the past tense (czas przeszły) and the future tense (czas przyszły), because they combine person, number, gender and aspect (aspekt).
What you need to know at B1 and B2
At B1 level, you are expected to know forms of the indicative mood (tryb oznajmujący) in the present tense (czas teraźniejszy), past tense and future tense. You need to recognize and create forms such as: umiem, rozumiem, wiem, jem, znam, chodzę, jadę, liczę, myję się. In the past tense, imperfective and perfective verbs appear, for example: leżały, kupowali, poszłam, zjadłeś, umyło się. In the future tense, you need to know the simple and compound form: pójdę, kupię, będziemy spacerować, będziecie chciały.
At B2 level, less frequent forms are added. The standard lists irregular verbs: wieźć, znaleźć, siąść, piec, móc, biec. The following forms appear: wiezie, niosę, pieką, biegniemy, płacze, zaczęły, ciął, urósł, zawiozę, polecimy, będziemy piec, będziecie piekły, urośnie.
This area is connected with the perfective and imperfective aspect. Without aspect it is hard to choose: będę kupować czy kupię. It is also connected with the imperative and conditional moods, because the same verb stems return in forms such as: weź, napiszmy, wzięłabym, mógłbyś.
Four conjugations and the present tense
Conjugation is the way a verb changes for person. In practice, it is best to learn a verb from two forms: ja and ty. They show the type of conjugation and the later endings.
| Practical type | Forms ja and ty | Example conjugation | Sentence |
|---|---|---|---|
| -ę, -esz | piszę, piszesz | piszę, piszesz, pisze, piszemy, piszecie, piszą | Codziennie piszę krótkie maile po polsku. |
| -ę, -isz | lubię, lubisz | lubię, lubisz, lubi, lubimy, lubicie, lubią | Lubię pracować rano, bo mam wtedy więcej energii. |
| -ę, -ysz | słyszę, słyszysz | słyszę, słyszysz, słyszy, słyszymy, słyszycie, słyszą | Słyszę, że sąsiedzi rozmawiają na klatce. |
| -am, -asz | czytam, czytasz | czytam, czytasz, czyta, czytamy, czytacie, czytają | Czytam regulamin przed podpisaniem umowy. |
| -em, -esz | umiem, umiesz | umiem, umiesz, umie, umiemy, umiecie, umieją | Umiem wypełnić ten formularz samodzielnie. |
The -ę, -isz type and the -ę, -ysz type are worth practising separately, because they produce different changes in the stem: lubię, but słyszę. Do not learn only the infinitive. The form robić does not automatically tell you whether it will be robię, robisz, robią. Write down: robić, robię, robisz.
Some verbs are frequent and irregular. You need to know them like vocabulary: być, jestem, jesteś; mieć, mam, masz; jeść, jem, jesz; wiedzieć, wiem, wiesz; iść, idę, idziesz; jechać, jadę, jedziesz.
Past tense (czas przeszły) and future tense (czas przyszły)
The past tense shows person (osoba) and gender (rodzaj). A woman says: Pracowałam wczoraj do późna. A man says: Pracowałem wczoraj do późna.
In the singular (liczba pojedyncza), we have masculine gender (rodzaj męski), feminine gender (rodzaj żeński) and neuter gender (rodzaj nijaki): on był, ona była, dziecko było. In the 1st and 2nd person, we add personal endings: byłem, byłam, byłeś, byłaś. In the plural (liczba mnoga), the division into masculine-personal forms (formy męskoosobowe) and non-masculine-personal forms (formy niemęskoosobowe) is important: Studenci kupili bilety. Studentki kupiły bilety. Dzieci kupiły bilety.
The future tense has two models. The simple future tense is formed from perfective verbs (czasowniki dokonane), that is, verbs that show a result: Jutro kupię bilet. W przyszłym tygodniu napiszę podanie. Po pracy pójdę do lekarza.
The compound future tense is formed from imperfective verbs (czasowniki niedokonane), that is, verbs that show duration, repetition or a process. Two versions are correct: będę pracować and będę pracował or będę pracowała. The first one uses the infinitive, the second shows the person's gender.
In the plural, you can also choose an infinitive form or a gendered form: Będziemy czekać na decyzję. Będziemy czekali na decyzję. Będziemy czekały na decyzję.
In the exam, you often have to choose between zrobię and będę robić. A one-time result: Zrobię przelew wieczorem. A process: Wieczorem będę robić przelew, więc oddzwonię później.
Difficult verbs: what to remember
At B2, the standard explicitly lists irregular verbs: wieźć, znaleźć, siąść, piec, móc, biec. These forms appear in texts, dialogues and grammar tasks.
Learn them in sets: móc, mogę, możesz, mogą, mogłem, mogłam, będę mógł, będę mogła. Biec: biegnę, biegniesz, biegną, biegłem, biegłam. Piec: piekę, pieczesz, pieką, piekłem, piekłam, będę piec albo będę piekł, będę piekła. Wieźć: wiozę, wieziesz, wiozą, wiozłem, wiozłam, zawiozę.
Be careful with verbs of motion. Iść, jechać, chodzić and jeździć are not interchangeable. I say: Dziś idę do urzędu, when I am going on foot or when I am talking about one trip out. I say: Często chodzę do tego urzędu, when I am describing repetition. You will find more pairs like this in the section verbs of motion and prefixes.
A verb often forces a specific case (przypadek) of the noun. We say: Potrzebuję dokumentów, but Wypełniam dokumenty. It is worth connecting this topic with verb government.
The rule in action: example sentences
- Dzisiaj pracuję z domu, bo czekam na kuriera.
- Wczoraj byłam w urzędzie i złożyłam wniosek o pobyt.
- Wczoraj byłem w banku, ale nie załatwiłem sprawy.
- Jutro kupię bilet miesięczny przez aplikację.
- W sobotę będziemy sprzątać mieszkanie po remoncie.
Byłam shows the past tense, 1st person and feminine gender. Kupię shows a future result. Będziemy sprzątać shows the future and a process.
Typical mistakes made by Ukrainian, Russian and English speakers
Ukrainian speakers:
- *Ja czytaju umowę instead of Czytam umowę. This is the influence of the Ukrainian form czytaju. In Polish, the verb czytać belongs to the type czytam, czytasz.
- *My piszemyli test instead of Pisaliśmy test albo Pisałyśmy test. In Polish, the person ending is part of the past form.
- *Jutro będę pisał podanie, when a woman is speaking, instead of Jutro będę pisała podanie albo Jutro będę pisać podanie. You have to choose the feminine form (forma żeńska) or the infinitive (bezokolicznik).
Russian speakers:
- *Wczoraj ja był w pracy instead of Wczoraj byłem w pracy albo Wczoraj byłam w pracy. In Polish, the past tense (czas przeszły) needs a personal ending.
- *Ty był w domu? instead of Byłeś w domu? albo Byłaś w domu? In the 2nd person of the past tense, there must be -eś or -aś.
- *One kupili bilety instead of One kupiły bilety. In Polish, you have to distinguish the masculine personal form (forma męskoosobowa) kupili from the non-masculine personal form (forma niemęskoosobowa) kupiły.
English speakers:
- *Ja jestem pracuję w biurze instead of Pracuję w biurze. This is a calque from English I am working. There is no English-type am + -ing construction in the ordinary Polish present tense (czas teraźniejszy), so we do not add jestem.
- *Jutro będę pójść do lekarza instead of Jutro pójdę do lekarza. With a perfective verb (czasownik dokonany), Polish uses the simple future (przyszłość prosta): the completed event is expressed by one future form, not by będę + infinitive.
- *Ona będzie kupiła bilet instead of Ona kupi bilet albo Ona będzie kupować bilet. Kupi is a result, będzie kupować is a process. English does not make this aspect (aspekt) choice in the same way; in Polish you must choose whether you mean the result or the ongoing process.
- *Ja studiował w Krakowie instead of Studiowałem w Krakowie albo Studiowałam w Krakowie. In Polish, the past tense shows the gender (rodzaj) of the person speaking.
What it looks like in the exam and what to review
Grammatical accuracy is a separate examination module. At B1, according to the sample papers from March 2020, the grammar module has 8 tasks and lasts 45 minutes. The whole module is worth 30 points. In task IV, you have to complete verb forms in the present tense and future tense (czas przyszły): 10 forms, 0.5 points each. In task VII, there is a choice of forms connected with aspect and moods (tryby): 10 forms, 0.5 points each. The past tense is also part of the B1 requirements.
At B2, according to the same sample papers, the grammar module has 8 tasks and lasts 60 minutes. The whole module is worth 40 points. One of the tasks covers aspect and the past and future tenses. At this level, you more often have to form the word yourself. Irregular verbs and stylistically more difficult forms are added.
The passing threshold is calculated separately for each module. At B1, you have to get at least 50 percent in each module of the written part and in the oral part. In the grammar module, this means at least 15 points out of 30. At B2, you have to get at least 60 percent in each module and in the oral part, so in grammar at least 24 points out of 40. Points from modules are not added together into an average. These thresholds come from the regulation in force for exams until 31 December 2026. The thresholds after 1 January 2027 are not known yet, because there is no new implementing act.
Before the exam, review especially:
- the conjugation of the most common verbs in the present tense: być, mieć, iść, jechać, wiedzieć, umieć, jeść;
- four practical types of conjugation (koniugacja): piszę, lubię, słyszę, czytam, umiem;
- the past tense with gender: byłem, byłam, byliśmy, byłyśmy, kupili, kupiły;
- the simple future of perfective verbs: zrobię, kupię, pójdę, napiszę;
- the compound future (przyszłość złożona) of imperfective verbs (czasowniki niedokonane): będę pracować, będę pracował, będę pracowała;
- B2 irregular verbs: móc, biec, piec, wieźć, znaleźć, siąść;
- the difference between process and result, that is, the topic described in more detail in the section on perfective aspect (aspekt dokonany) and imperfective aspect (aspekt niedokonany).
