Participles (imiesłowy) in the B2 and C1 exam

Participles (imiesłowy) are essential at B2 and C1 because they test aspect (aspekt), declension (odmiana), the passive voice (strona bierna) and sentence syntax at the same time.

Participles (imiesłowy) are forms of the verb (czasownik) that keep part of the verb meaning, but work in a sentence like an adjective (przymiotnik) or an adverb (przysłówek). In the exam, they can cost you points, because you have to combine several skills at once: choose the aspect (aspekt), form the word, match gender (rodzaj), number (liczba), and case (przypadek), or correctly shorten a complex sentence. At B2, participles appear directly in the grammatical accuracy module. At C1, you also have to work more independently: you do not choose a form from a list, but create it yourself.

Four types of participles: the most important map

An adjectival participle (imiesłów przymiotnikowy) declines like an adjective. This means that it agrees with the noun (rzeczownik) in gender, number, and case. If you have trouble with endings, go back to the section Adjective and pronoun declension.

An adverbial participle (imiesłów przysłówkowy) does not decline. It describes an additional action by the same person or the same subject. Here the most important thing is aspect, so it is worth reviewing Perfective and imperfective aspect.

Type of participle From which verb Typical ending Does it decline? Example in a sentence Meaning
Active adjectival (przymiotnikowy czynny) most often imperfective -ący, -ąca, -ące yes Pracujący rodzice często załatwiają sprawy po południu. someone is doing something or usually does it
Passive adjectival (przymiotnikowy bierny) usually a transitive verb (czasownik przechodni) -ny, -ony, -ty yes Formularz podpisany przez klienta leży na biurku. something has been done to a thing or person
Simultaneous adverbial (przysłówkowy współczesny) imperfective -ąc no Czekając na tramwaj, sprawdziłem pocztę. the action happens at the same time
Anterior adverbial (przysłówkowy uprzedni) perfective -wszy, -łszy no Wypełniwszy wniosek, poszedłem do kasy. the action happened earlier

Do not learn these forms as a stylistic decoration. Learn them as a tool for transforming sentences. That is exactly what the exam likes.

Active and passive adjectival participles

An active adjectival participle answers the question: jaki? jaka? jakie? We form it from an imperfective verb. It talks about a person or thing that performs an action.

Examples:

  • Kobieta stojąca przy oknie rozmawia przez telefon.
  • Studenci mieszkający w akademiku płacą mniej za dojazdy.
  • Dziecko płaczące w poczekalni przestraszyło się lekarza.

It is easy to turn this kind of participle into a clause with "który".

  • Kobieta, która stoi przy oknie, rozmawia przez telefon.
  • Kobieta stojąca przy oknie rozmawia przez telefon.

A passive adjectival participle talks about a person or thing that someone or something acts on. It is very close to the passive voice (strona bierna). If you do not feel this difference, review the section Passive voice and impersonal forms.

Examples:

  • Wniosek złożony w urzędzie czeka na rozpatrzenie.
  • Rachunek zapłacony przez ojca był bardzo wysoki.
  • Drzwi zamknięte na klucz nie otworzyły się automatycznie.

Compare three sentences with the same meaning:

  • Ojciec zapłacił rachunek.
  • Rachunek został zapłacony przez ojca.
  • Rachunek zapłacony przez ojca był bardzo wysoki.

At B2 and C1, declension is important. It is not enough to know the form "podpisany". You have to write: "podpisanego dokumentu", "podpisanej umowy", "podpisanymi dokumentami".

Adverbial participles: when you may shorten a sentence

The present adverbial participle (imiesłów przysłówkowy współczesny) ends in -ąc. We form it from an imperfective verb (czasownik niedokonany). It describes an action simultaneous with the main action.

  • Idąc do pracy, słucham podcastu.
  • Rozmawiając z klientem, notowałem najważniejsze informacje.
  • Czekając na decyzję, sprawdzamy status sprawy w systemie.

The most important rule: the subject must be the same. The person who is going must be the same person who is listening. The person who is talking must be the same person who is taking notes.

Incorrect: *Idąc do pracy, zadzwonił telefon. Correct: Kiedy szedłem do pracy, zadzwonił telefon.

A phone cannot "iść do pracy". That is why the participle is incorrect here.

The anterior adverbial participle (imiesłów przysłówkowy uprzedni) describes an earlier action. We form it from a perfective verb (czasownik dokonany). It is more common in written, official and literary texts than in everyday conversation.

  • Przeczytawszy umowę, podpisałem dokument.
  • Wypełniwszy formularz, oddała go w sekretariacie.
  • Usiadłszy przy biurku, zaczął pisać odpowiedź.

At B2, the standard requires forming and using present adverbial participles to a limited extent, and recognizing anterior adverbial participles. At C1, you already need to form and use both types.

Changing subordinate clauses into participial constructions

The exam often tests not the name of the form itself, but the ability to transform a sentence. The section Conjunctions and complex sentences helps here, because you must understand what kind of sentence you are shortening.

You can often shorten a relative clause (zdanie względne) with "który" to an adjectival participle (imiesłów przymiotnikowy).

  • Chłopak, który siedzi przy drzwiach, jest moim sąsiadem.

  • Chłopak siedzący przy drzwiach jest moim sąsiadem.

  • Opinia, którą premier przytoczył, wywołała dyskusję.

  • Przytoczona przez premiera opinia wywołała dyskusję.

You can sometimes shorten a time clause (zdanie czasowe) with "kiedy" or "gdy" to an adverbial participle.

  • Kiedy wracałem z pracy, spotkałem znajomego.

  • Wracając z pracy, spotkałem znajomego.

  • Gdy zamknął komputer, wyszedł z biura.

  • Zamknąwszy komputer, wyszedł z biura.

Watch the meaning. The present adverbial participle expresses simultaneity. The anterior adverbial participle expresses order: first one action, then the other.

Not every complex sentence is worth shortening. In official and academic writing, participial constructions are natural. In conversation, they sometimes sound too heavy. At C1, the stylistic value of syntactic constructions also matters, meaning the ability to choose a form that fits the text. This is part of the broader topic Syntax and word order.

Examples of sentences that are genuinely useful

  1. Osoby czekające na wizytę proszone są o zachowanie ciszy.
  2. Dokumenty wysłane pocztą dotarły po tygodniu.
  3. Mieszkanie wynajmowane przez studentów znajduje się blisko metra.
  4. Jadąc tramwajem, często powtarzam nowe słowa.
  5. Rozmawiając z urzędnikiem, warto mieć przy sobie numer sprawy.
  6. Przeczytawszy instrukcję, łatwiej wypełnisz formularz.
  7. Zgubiwszy kartę, natychmiast zadzwoniła do banku.
  8. Pracownicy zatrudnieni na umowę o pracę mają inne obowiązki niż zleceniobiorcy.
  9. Kobieta prowadząca szkolenie odpowiedziała na wszystkie pytania.
  10. Po sprawdzeniu danych system wygenerował potwierdzenie. This is not a participle, but a sentence equivalent similar in function to a participial construction.

Typical mistakes made by Ukrainian-, Russian-, and English-speaking learners

For Ukrainian-speaking learners, similarity of forms often has an effect. Polish looks familiar, so it is easy to transfer a foreign ending or syntax.

  • *pracujący w firmie kobieta instead of Kobieta pracująca w firmie zna język polski. The mistake comes from a mismatch of gender (rodzaj), number (liczba), and case (przypadek), even though similar forms exist in Ukrainian.
  • *czytając umowę, ona została podpisana instead of Po przeczytaniu umowy została ona podpisana or Przeczytawszy umowę, podpisała ją. This is a syntactic calque: the participle suggests that "umowa" was reading itself.

For Russian-speaking learners, the problem is sometimes a false sense of safety. Russian has similar constructions, but the Polish norm keeps strict control over agreement with the subject (podmiot) and over inflection (odmiana).

  • *człowiek, czytający gazetę, siedzi tam instead of Człowiek czytający gazetę siedzi tam. The comma is a calque from Russian punctuation. In Polish, a single participle with modifiers before a noun usually does not require such a comma.
  • *napisany przeze mnie podanie leży na stole instead of Napisane przeze mnie podanie leży na stole. The mistake comes from not taking into account the neuter gender of the noun "podanie".

For English-speaking learners, the influence of forms such as "working", "written", and "having done" is common. English has different rules, and one form may correspond to several Polish constructions.

  • *Pracując dokument jest gotowy instead of Kiedy pracuję, dokument jest gotowy or Dokument przygotowany przeze mnie jest gotowy. This is a calque from an English reduced clause with no clear subject.
  • *Zrobiając zadanie, wysłałem je nauczycielowi instead of Zrobiwszy zadanie, wysłałem je nauczycielowi or Po zrobieniu zadania wysłałem je nauczycielowi. The mistake comes from not distinguishing between simultaneity and anteriority.
  • *zainteresujący film instead of interesujący film. This is a false analogy: from "interesować" we form "interesujący", while "zainteresowany" means that someone is interested in something.
  • *Ja widziałem dziewczynę siedzący na ławce instead of Widziałem dziewczynę siedzącą na ławce. The mistake comes from the fact that this kind of form is not declined in English.

What this looks like in the exam

Participles (imiesłowy) are tested in the "grammatical accuracy" module. This is a separate module of the written part.

At B2, the written part has 4 modules of 40 points each, 160 points in total. According to the sample papers from March 2020, the grammatical accuracy module lasts 60 minutes and has 8 tasks. The task types include participles, impersonal forms (formy nieosobowe) and the passive voice (strona bierna), and changing complex sentences (zdania złożone) into single sentences. This means that you may get both form-building and sentence-transformation tasks.

At C1, the written part also has 4 modules of 40 points each, 160 points in total. In the sample papers, the grammatical accuracy module lasts 60 minutes and has 7 tasks. At C1, there are no closed tasks in this module: you have to produce every form yourself. Participles may appear when changing complex sentences into single sentences and in tasks where you complete forms.

Until 31 December 2026, the pass threshold at B2 and C1 is at least 60% in each module separately and in the oral part. Points are not calculated as an average. A weak result in grammar alone means a failed exam, even if writing, reading, listening, and speaking went well. After 1 January 2027, the thresholds are not yet known, because the new implementing regulation has not been issued.

What to review before the exam

  • Forming the active adjectival participle (imiesłów przymiotnikowy czynny) from imperfective verbs: pracujący, czytający, mieszkający.
  • Forming the passive adjectival participle (imiesłów przymiotnikowy bierny) and its connection with the passive voice (strona bierna): podpisany, zamknięty, przygotowany.
  • Declension of adjectival participles by gender, number and case (przypadek).
  • The difference between "robiąc" and "zrobiwszy": at the same time or earlier.
  • The rule of the same subject with adverbial participles (imiesłowy przysłówkowe).
  • Changing sentences with "który", "kiedy" and "gdy" into participial constructions.
  • Style: in conversation, keep it simpler; in a formal text, you can use a participial construction.
