Verb aspect (aspekt czasownika) in practice
Verb aspect (aspekt czasownika) tells you whether you show an action as a process, as repetition, or as a whole with a result.
Verb aspect is difficult because knowing the translation of a word is not enough. You also have to decide how you are looking at the action: whether it is ongoing, repeated, a habit, or whether it has a clear end and result. In Polish, this decision is obligatory in almost every sentence with a verb. That is why you should not learn aspect as a table. Learn it as a choice of meaning in a specific situation.
First understand the difference, then learn the forms
Aspect (aspekt), that is, information about whether an action is ongoing/repeated or is seen as a whole with a result, has two basic types.
An imperfective verb (czasownik niedokonany) shows a process, duration, repetition, or the mere fact that an action is performed. What matters is that something was happening, is happening, or will be happening.
Examples:
- Wczoraj pisałem maila do urzędu przez godzinę.
- Codziennie rano czytam wiadomości.
- W weekend będę sprzątać mieszkanie.
A perfective verb (czasownik dokonany) shows an action as a whole. Most often, the result, the end, or a single completed performance is important.
Examples:
- Wczoraj napisałem maila do urzędu i wysłałem go po południu.
- Przeczytałem wiadomość od administracji.
- W weekend posprzątam mieszkanie.
The simplest test is this: is the result important in the sentence? If yes, usually choose the perfective aspect. Is duration, repetition, or a habit important? If yes, usually choose the imperfective aspect.
Also remember tense. Perfective verbs do not have a normal present tense (czas teraźniejszy). A form such as napiszę, kupię, zrobię looks present to many people, but it means the future. If you confuse the forms here, go back to the section Tenses and conjugations.
How to choose the aspect in a specific sentence
Do not start with the question: what is the equivalent in my language? Start with the question: what do I want to say?
- If you are talking about a habit, use the imperfective.
- W każdą środę chodzę na basen.
- Zwykle płacę kartą.
- Po pracy uczę się polskiego.
- If you are talking about a one-time action with a result, use the perfective.
- Dzisiaj zapłaciłem rachunek za prąd.
- Wypełniłam formularz online.
- Jutro zadzwonię do przychodni.
- If you are saying how long something lasted, usually use the imperfective.
- Przez dwie godziny pisałem odwołanie.
- Cały wieczór czytałam umowę najmu.
- Od rana czekałem na telefon.
- If you are saying that something has been finished, use the perfective.
- Napisałem odwołanie i mogę je wysłać.
- Przeczytałam umowę i mam kilka pytań.
- Doczekałem się telefonu z urzędu.
- If you are talking about a plan as an activity, use the imperfective. If you are talking about carrying out the plan, use the perfective.
- Jutro będę pisać podanie, więc nie mogę się spotkać.
- Jutro napiszę podanie i od razu je wyślę.
- In prohibitions, the imperfective is often needed because you are forbidding the action itself.
- Nie otwieraj tego załącznika.
- Nie podpisuj umowy bez przeczytania.
In commands, when you want a result, the perfective is often needed.
- Otwórz załącznik i sprawdź numer sprawy.
- Podpisz umowę na ostatniej stronie.
If the problem is connected with commands or forms with by, see also The imperative and conditional moods (tryb rozkazujący i przypuszczający).
Example sentences: aspect (aspekt) in real situations
The pairs below are not for translating word for word. Read them as a change in point of view.
A good exercise is to add a second sentence after the conjunction bo, więc or dlatego. Then you immediately see whether you are talking about a process or about a result.
- Czytałem umowę, więc wiem, że jest długa.
- Przeczytałem umowę, więc mogę ją podpisać.
How to learn aspect pairs
Do not write down only the pair pisać - napisać. Write the pair in two sentences. Without a sentence, you do not know when to use the form.
A good entry in your notebook looks like this:
- pisać: Wczoraj pisałem CV przez godzinę.
- napisać: Wczoraj napisałem CV i wysłałem je do firmy.
Learn pairs by topic. A person living in Poland first needs verbs connected with offices, work, housing, doctors and study. For example:
- wypełniać - wypełnić: Wypełniam formularz. Wypełniłem formularz.
- płacić - zapłacić: Co miesiąc płacę czynsz. Zapłaciłem czynsz.
- rezerwować - zarezerwować: Często rezerwuję wizyty online. Zarezerwowałem wizytę.
- zgłaszać - zgłosić: Zgłaszam problem administracji. Zgłosiłem problem.
- umawiać się - umówić się: Umawiam się do lekarza. Umówiłem się do lekarza.
Pay attention to prefixes: na-, za-, po-, prze-, wy-, u-, z-. They often form the perfective aspect, but they do not work like a mechanical button. Sometimes they also change the meaning.
- pisać - napisać: the main point is the completion of writing.
- pisać - zapisać: it usually means noting something down or registering it.
- czytać - przeczytać: the point is reading the whole thing.
- czytać - odczytać: it may mean reading information, a number or a message.
With verbs of motion, prefixes are especially important because they change the direction and the sense. If you confuse przyjechać, dojechać, wyjechać and pojechać, go to the section Verbs of motion and prefixes.
Some pairs are irregular or very different:
- brać - wziąć: Biorę leki rano. Wziąłem lek po śniadaniu.
- mówić - powiedzieć: Często mówię po polsku w pracy. Powiedziałem kierownikowi o problemie.
- oglądać - obejrzeć: Oglądam polskie filmy. Obejrzałem film do końca.
Learn such pairs like vocabulary, not like a rule.
Typical mistakes made by Ukrainian, Russian and English speakers
- *Już robiłem przelew, pieniądze powinny być na koncie. - Już zrobiłem przelew, pieniądze powinny być na koncie.
The mistake comes from the fact that robić sounds neutral and fits many situations. Here the result is important: the transfer has been made.
- *Przez cały wieczór przeczytałem regulamin. - Przez cały wieczór czytałem regulamin.
The expression przez cały wieczór shows duration. English speakers often translate this with one verb, read, and do not mark the difference.
- *Codziennie zapłacę kartą w sklepie. - Codziennie płacę kartą w sklepie.
Codziennie means a habit. For Ukrainian and Russian speakers, the mistake often comes from transferring a future form or from automatically choosing a verb with a prefix.
- *Jutro będę napisać maila do dziekanatu. - Jutro napiszę maila do dziekanatu.
In Polish, the future with będę combines with a verb in the imperfective aspect (aspekt niedokonany): będę pisać. A perfective verb (czasownik dokonany) forms the simple future (przyszłość prosta): napiszę.
- *Proszę czytać formularz do końca i podpisać. - Proszę przeczytać formularz do końca i podpisać.
In an instruction, the point is the result: the form is to be read in full. The activity of reading by itself is not enough.
- *Nie zapomnij zabierać paszportu na spotkanie. - Nie zapomnij zabrać paszportu na spotkanie.
This is about one situation and a specific result: the passport should be with you. Zabierać fits a habit, for example: Zawsze zabieram paszport.
- *Kiedy skończyłem pracę, dzwoniłem do ciebie. - Kiedy skończyłem pracę, zadzwoniłem do ciebie.
The second action is one-off and happened after the first one. Dzwoniłem suggests a process or an attempt, not the fact that the phone call was made.
- *Muszę nauczyć się polskiego codziennie. - Muszę uczyć się polskiego codziennie.
Codziennie usually requires the imperfective aspect, because you are talking about regular work. Nauczyć się means to achieve a result. You can say: Chcę nauczyć się polskiego na poziomie B1.
In many mistakes, aspect (aspekt) combines with verb government (rekcja czasownika), meaning which case (przypadek) a verb requires. If, after changing the aspect, the form of the noun also changes, check Verb government.
What is enough at B1, and what you need at higher levels
At B1, you must recognize and use aspect in the basic tenses and in simple sentences. The most important are everyday pairs: robić - zrobić, pisać - napisać, czytać - przeczytać, kupować - kupić, płacić - zapłacić, uczyć się - nauczyć się, oglądać - obejrzeć, brać - wziąć. You also need to distinguish the simple future from the compound future (przyszłość złożona): kupię, but będę kupować.
At B2, you need more independence. It is not enough to choose one of two forms. You need to be able to create forms in a longer text, connect aspect with the past and future tenses, and understand aspect in complex sentences and in a more formal style. There are also constructions in which aspect works together with the passive voice (strona bierna) and impersonal forms (formy bezosobowe). If you are studying for B2, it is worth working through The passive voice and impersonal forms at the same time.
At C1, aspect does not disappear, it simply becomes more semantic and stylistic. The nuances of prefixes, less frequently used verbs and the choice of a form that matches the style of the text are important. The difference between przebadać grupę ludzi, zbadać pacjenta and badać sprawę is not only grammatical. It is also vocabulary and precision.
Work plan for the coming week
- Choose 20 verbs that you really use in Poland: urząd, praca, mieszkanie, lekarz, studia.
- For each one, add an aspectual pair for aspect (aspekt) and 2 sentences: one with a process or habit, the other with a result.
- Every day, for 10 minutes, transform sentences: czytam - przeczytam, pisałem - napisałem, będę robić - zrobię.
- Mark these words in texts: już, jeszcze, codziennie, zwykle, przez godzinę, do końca. They often suggest the aspect.
- Record 10 sentences about your day and check whether you are talking about a habit, a process or a result.
- Once a week, go back to the incorrect sentences and correct them out loud. Aspect needs to be automated, not only understood.
