How to study the past and future tenses

First recognize aspect, then choose tense and gender. This order makes the Polish past and future tenses clearer.

The past tense (czas przeszły) and the future tense (czas przyszły) are difficult not because they have a very large number of forms, but because you have to make several decisions at once. Is the action completed? Are you talking about a process, a habit or a result? Who is speaking: a woman, a man, a mixed group, a group of women? In Polish, the verb often shows not only tense, but also gender (rodzaj). That is why simply translating from Ukrainian, Russian or English is usually not enough.

Start with aspect (aspekt), not with endings

First ask: is the verb imperfective (niedokonany) or perfective (dokonany). Aspect tells you whether we are talking about duration, repetition and process, or about a completed result.

Imperfective verbs answer the question "co robić?". For example: pisać, czytać, kupować, załatwiać. You use them when the process, the habit or the length of the action is important. I say: Wczoraj pisałem maila przez godzinę. I am not saying whether the email was finished.

Perfective verbs answer the question "co zrobić?". For example: napisać, przeczytać, kupić, załatwić. You use them when the result is important. I say: Wczoraj napisałem maila do urzędu. The email is ready.

Without this decision, you cannot build the future tense well. An imperfective verb forms the compound future tense: będę pisać or będę pisał. A perfective verb forms the simple future tense: napiszę. If you confuse aspect, go back to the section Perfective and imperfective aspect, because this is the foundation of the whole topic.

Past tense: learn person together with gender

In the past tense, the form changes according to person (osoba), number (liczba) and gender. Do not learn just "pisał", because that is not enough. Learn full blocks.

For "ja", you have different forms depending on the speaker:

  • I am a man: Wczoraj pisałem podanie.
  • I am a woman: Wczoraj pisałam podanie.

For "ty", gender is important too:

  • You are speaking to a man: Czy pisałeś już do właściciela mieszkania?
  • You are speaking to a woman: Czy pisałaś już do właściciela mieszkania?

For "on, ona, ono", gender is very clearly visible:

  • On pracował w sobotę.
  • Ona pracowała w sobotę.
  • Dziecko spało po obiedzie.

In the plural, the most important division is between the masculine-personal group (grupa męskoosobowa) and the non-masculine-personal group (grupa niemęskoosobowa). A masculine-personal group is a group with at least one male person. A non-masculine-personal group means women, children, things, animals.

  • Marek i Anna czekali na autobus.
  • Anna i Olga czekały na autobus.
  • Dzieci czekały na autobus.

If this division is still uncertain for you, review Grammatical gender and plural. Without it, you will also make mistakes in adjectives and pronouns.

Future tense (czas przyszły): three decisions in the right order

When working with the future tense, always follow this order.

First decision: aspect (aspekt). If the verb is perfective (dokonany), you use the simple future tense (czas przyszły prosty). You do not add "będę".

  • Jutro napiszę wniosek.
  • Za tydzień kupimy bilety.
  • Po pracy zadzwonię do lekarza.

These forms look similar to the present tense, but they refer to the future, because perfective verbs do not have a normal present tense. "Kupię" means "I will buy", not "I am buying".

Second decision: if the verb is imperfective (niedokonany), you choose the compound future tense (czas przyszły złożony). You have two correct forms.

Form 1: "będę" plus the infinitive (bezokolicznik), that is, the basic form of the verb.

  • Jutro będę pisać CV.
  • Wieczorem będziemy oglądać film.
  • W weekend będą sprzątać mieszkanie.

Form 2: "będę" plus the gendered form (forma rodzajowa), similar to the past tense.

  • Jutro będę pisał CV. Tak mówi mężczyzna.
  • Jutro będę pisała CV. Tak mówi kobieta.
  • Wieczorem będziemy oglądali film. Tak mówi grupa męskoosobowa albo mieszana.
  • Wieczorem będziemy oglądały film. Tak mówi grupa kobiet.

Both forms are correct: będę pisać and będę pisał or będę pisała. At B1, the form with the infinitive is often safer, because it does not require gender. But you also have to recognize the gendered form, because it appears in texts and tasks. At B2 and C1, it is worth being able to use both forms freely, especially in a longer response.

Third decision: the meaning of the sentence. "Będę pisać" is a process or a plan. "Napiszę" is a result. Compare:

  • Jutro będę pisać pracę, więc nie mogę się spotkać.
  • Jutro napiszę pracę i wyślę ją promotorowi.

If you have trouble with verb conjugation, practise Tenses and conjugations at the same time.

What is enough at B1, and what you need to know at higher levels

At B1, you must correctly form the past tense (czas przeszły) of imperfective and perfective verbs. You also have to use the simple future and the compound future, including the infinitive form and the gendered form. In practice, this means: recognize the aspect, choose the tense, match the gender and the person.

At B1, the most important verbs are common ones: robić, zrobić, pisać, napisać, czytać, przeczytać, kupować, kupić, jechać, pojechać, iść, pójść, mieć, być, chcieć, móc. Do not start with exceptions. First, make everyday sentences automatic.

At B2, the requirements are broader. More difficult and irregular verbs are added, for example móc, biec, piec, znaleźć, siąść. You also have to control aspect better in a longer text. One correct sentence is not enough. The whole paragraph should have a logical sequence of tenses: first the process, then the result.

At C1, greater precision and style are added. You must understand rarer forms, verbs with prefixes, and differences in meaning. "Przepisać", "dopisać", "odpisać" and "zapisać" are not interchangeable. If you are learning such pairs, the section Verbs of motion and prefixes will be helpful, because prefixes often change both aspect and meaning.

Sentences worth being able to say and write

  1. Wczoraj byłem w urzędzie, ale nie załatwiłem sprawy.
  2. Wczoraj byłam u lekarza i dostałam skierowanie na badania.
  3. Jutro będę dzwonić do administracji, bo w mieszkaniu nie ma ogrzewania.
  4. Jutro zadzwonię do administracji i poproszę o pilną naprawę.
  5. W sobotę będziemy sprzątać mieszkanie po remoncie.
  6. W sobotę posprzątamy mieszkanie i oddamy klucze właścicielowi.
  7. Moi koledzy czekali przed salą, a koleżanki wypełniały formularze.
  8. Za miesiąc pojedziemy do Krakowa, jeśli dostaniemy wolne w pracy.
  9. Kiedy mieszkałem w Lublinie, codziennie chodziłem pieszo do szkoły językowej.
  10. Kiedy zamieszkam bliżej centrum, będę jeździć do pracy tramwajem.

Practise such pairs out loud. One sentence with a process, the other with a result. This builds the habit faster than a conjugation table alone.

Typical mistakes made by Ukrainian-speaking, Russian-speaking, and English-speaking learners

  • *Ja wczoraj czytał książkę - Wczoraj czytałem książkę. The mistake often comes from Ukrainian and Russian, where the past-tense form (forma przeszła) does not have the same person ending (końcówka osoby) as in Polish.
  • *Ja wczoraj czytała książkę - Wczoraj czytałam książkę. A woman speaking about herself needs the ending "-am", not only the feminine form (forma żeńska).
  • *Ona będzie pracował jutro - Ona będzie pracowała jutro albo Ona będzie pracować jutro. The mistake comes from not paying attention to gender (rodzaj) in the compound form.
  • *Jutro będę napisać podanie - Jutro napiszę podanie. "Napisać" is perfective (dokonane), so the future tense (czas przyszły) is formed simply.
  • *Jutro będę kupić bilet - Jutro kupię bilet. This is the same problem: a perfective verb does not normally combine with "będę" in this meaning.
  • *Wczoraj kupię bilet - Wczoraj kupiłem bilet albo Wczoraj kupiłam bilet. The form "kupię" refers to the future, and the adverb "wczoraj" requires the past tense (czas przeszły).
  • *My z Anną pracowaliśmy cały dzień - My z Anną pracowałyśmy cały dzień. If two women are speaking about themselves, the non-masculine-personal form (forma niemęskoosobowa) is needed.
  • *Anna i Marek pracowały cały dzień - Anna i Marek pracowali cały dzień. A mixed group with a male person requires the masculine-personal form (forma męskoosobowa).
  • *I will robić to jutro, więc będę zrobić to jutro - Jutro będę to robić albo Jutro to zrobię. The mistake comes from English "will", which does not distinguish aspect (aspekt).

With mistakes like these, do not correct only one word. Correct the whole sentence: tense (czas), aspect, person, and gender. You can find more about the influence of your native language in the section Typical mistakes: interference from the native language.

Work plan for the next week

  • Day 1: write down 20 aspect pairs (pary aspektowe), for example pisać - napisać, kupować - kupić.
  • Day 2: conjugate 10 verbs in the past tense for "ja", "ty", "on", "ona", "my", "oni", "one".
  • Day 3: write 10 sentences about yesterday. Mark where you are talking about a process and where about a result.
  • Day 4: write 10 sentences about plans for tomorrow. Use five "będę robić" forms and five "zrobię" forms.
  • Day 5: read your sentences and check gender: pisałem, pisałam, pisaliśmy, pisałyśmy.
  • Day 6: record a one-minute statement about what you did yesterday and what you will do tomorrow.
  • Day 7: correct the recording in writing. Write down each mistake as a pair: *forma błędna - forma poprawna.
